I recently brought my custom PC to Smyrna Computers because it was shutting down after a couple of minutes and wouldn’t even reach the POST screen. I had just manually switched the computer case, so I wanted to make sure everything was set up correctly.
Initially, I was impressed by the staff, who seemed more knowledgeable than me, and they kept me updated throughout the process. They mentioned there might be a serious issue with the motherboard and even confirmed that I had put the computer together correctly (which, in fact, I hadn't at the time).
However, despite their professionalism, they were unable to resolve the issue and wanted to charge me a fee to hold the PC while waiting for a replacement motherboard. I decided not to go forward with the repair, and I’m glad I wasn’t charged for bringing it in.
Afterward, I learned that the problem was simply a matter of my power cable for the cooling system not being plugged in, which caused the computer to shut down because the CPU wasn’t being cooled. This was a simple, solvable issue that should have been easily noticed by the technician at the shop. I ended up fixing it myself, saving nearly $200 in unnecessary repairs.
My concern is not just about my own experience, but also that I had been warned by others who had a similar issue at Smyrna Computers. They were also told it was a motherboard issue, paid for repairs, and later discovered the problem was actually due to incorrect assembly that the technicians failed to catch. They had to seek help elsewhere to get their PC fixed properly.
