An underwater garden, a great idea from the fantastic city of San Diego!!
The park is located at La Jolla Beach and covers an area of about 6 kilometers, stretching itself from the Black´s Beach, all the way to La Jolla Cove.
Basically, what you will experience, are beautiful artificially planted corals. Be ready then to rent (or if you own them, lucky you!) a snorkel equipment from the local shops, which are scattered all over town, and lets the adventure begin!
Swimming together with the many sea lions that populate the water, while observing the underwater creatures, is something truly inspiring. Don't expect that to be an easy task though, since the water is cold (a wet suit is HIGHLY recommended, of course), the sea current can be very strong, the big waves will make your swimming experience quite challenging and, sometimes, the underwater visibility is scarce.
When we visited the park, we swam for about 2 kilometers, in this challenging environment. Once we reached the rocks, which mark the end of the garden, we were super exhausted. Luckily the immense beauty of the place will make you forget about all these obstacles.
Thanks sunny San Diego...
Read moreWe came to look for leopard sharks. My adult daughter saw one, but my swim goggles broke so I missed out. We came on a Tuesday in late August at 2pm. We parked in the lot at La Jolla Shores Beach and walked over. There were so many kayaks! It was 3 hours before low tide and the water was 72F so it was easy to wade out very far from shore. The sand turns to Boulders as we move South of the beach so it is easier to swim than to walk. However, I had been warned about kayaks running over swimmers, and it was hard to avoid the large tour groups. I rarely swim in the ocean but it was easier than I expected to get used to the surge. I am glad my daughter saw a shark, but the day we were there, they weren't as plentiful as in the videos online. I could have rented snorkel gear, but that was such a long walk that I decided just to enjoy the swim. We recently moved to San Diego County so I will go back some day. After our swim, we hiked up to the swing at Birch Aquarium, across the beautiful pedestrian bridge and over to the ocean overlook with equinox and solstice boulders near the Martin House Wedding Venue. The Scripps/UCSD campus has many...
Read moreThey place offers some awesome kayaking and snorkeling with a lot of amazing life to see underwater. That is...IF you get parking. The place is now infested with tourists clogging up the streets and parking is slim to none. If you're a local then you know to just park in one of the nearby structures for 15 bucks. Otherwise you'll run circles around this town for 30 mins to an hour before you find free streetside parking for 2 hrs max. The tourists have also trashed the sea floor. You'll find and endless collection of bought and rented snorkeling gear. You'll find trash throughout the reef and endless tourists harassing the seals by seeing how close they can get for a selfie until the seal barks at them. This place isn't what it used...
