So we made a last minute decision to book this place for the weekend and it was awesome! I read quiet a few reviews before booking and saw some mixed ones. Here's my experience; The rooms arent the highest quality for what you pay for but had most of the amenities I would want. Decent size TV, a good size mini fridge (able to hold more than 2-3 cans/bottles), and nice beds. For the price of the room, it could "look" nicer, but it's hard to be picky when your right on the ocean. The hotel has great customer service. They give you chairs, umbrellas, and beach towels for the beach which is nice so you dont have to lug all of your own stuff out if you dont want. They have a desk stationed on the boardwalk with hotel staff ready to help you with anything! We ate at the Shores Restaurant a couple different times and didnt have any issues. The service was good as well as the food. It wasn't the best food ever, but it was good enough to go back. We parked the car in the garage ($28/day) and didnt move it all weekend. This was the best part as anybody knows dealing with traffic, especially close to the beach, can be a hassle and sometimes frustrating. Being able to walk to everything we wanted to do/eat/see all from this hotel was a huge benefit. We wanted more of a relaxed weekend on the beach, not really going out to see anything, so this place was perfect. The beach was busy (as to be expected this time of year), but didnt have a lot of "seaweed" per say like Mission Beach does for example. The hotel also offers activities you can sign up for like paddle boarding, kayaking, etc. We have this on the list for the next visit. On the final morning, checkout wasnt until 12pm so we were able to sit on the beach for a short bit before leaving and had the opportunity to see some dolphins only a couple hundred feet from shore! Keep in mind, this was right out back of the hotel on the beach, and we're sitting in launch chairs watching the waves and had a few glimpses of them coming out of the water. This is the only hotel I've ever reviewed like this and this will be our go to spot when visiting San Diego in the future. Thank you La Jolla Shores Hotel!

Beach Access-And Not Much Else I usually start with “The Good” and then list the “Not So Good”. Our experience makes this a challenge. First of all the web photos are misleading. They may have rooms that look like the ones pictured, but they are not the standard for all rooms. There is a cramped parking garage, but there is a daily parking fee. $$ Our first room was little better than a dirty, dingy Motel 6. $400 a night.$$$ The second room (we were upgraded because the first room was full of bugs) was adequate. It boasted a “coastal view”. Yes, you can see the coast-over the tops of the row of portable toilets. There is no breakfast service Monday through Friday, only “Grab and Go” which is $$ not cheap but poorly produced. One individual young lady was handling all of the frustrated guests that discovered (one-by-one) that there is no dining room service for breakfast. She was handling all questions, taking all orders for Grab and Go, and preparing ALL THE FOOD AND DRINKS! One person! Post pandemic staffing problems to be sure, but poorly communicated as witnessed by confused hotel guests wandering around asking questions. The front desk staff was a mixed bag. One was stellar, one was adequate and one was better not spoken about. The pool was packed (on a Sunday) and full of screaming children. Not the children’s fault, but if you’re looking for a charming, tranquil seaside vacation this is not it. The hotel itself was built in 1970 and is in disrepair. Rain on Monday revealed several roof leaks that were accommodated by plastic buckets catching the water. Seating in the garden area was dirty and in disrepair, torn cushions, bird poop and stains. And the “icing” on the cake was a backed up sink that reeked of sewage. All in all a big disappointment. Two stars because of the proximity to the beach, and the two staff members that we encountered who tried to go above and beyond. Unfortunately they couldn’t overcome the multiple deficiencies. We knew we weren’t getting 4/5 star experience with this hotel when we booked but chose it for the central and beachfront location. While it wasn’t anything we didn’t expect I do still think it was expensive for what it was. Meaning we could have stayed at a much nicer property for the same price that may not have been right on the beach but still on the ocean. |- Check in was ok but no help with bags or even direction to the elevator. Room was ready early which was appreciated. |- The room was as expected. We had a 3D tour before we stayed. Some of the furniture/fixtures are extremely worn and outdated, peeling paint etc. Things just felt dirty, like I wanted to put a sheet on the couch before sitting on it or didn’t want to touch the headboard. More in line with a 2-3 star chain hotel. It did smell upon arrival (musty linens) so we aired out the room but the musty scent lingered throughout the stay. |- We were on a corner ocean view which was one of the reasons for the higher cost and the view was amazing! The breeze coming through was perfect. The balcony is giant and wraps around (but only has 2 chairs). The light coming in was amazing and we loved the tall ceilings. The slow mornings looking at the ocean and sunsets made the entire stay! We were closest to the park and they emptied the trash around 5:30 am a couple mornings which woke up my kids and the park is just generally loud. |- As we were unpacking we noticed a ton of little ants by the ice bucket and cups. We called down and they had housekeeping up quickly they sprayed and cleaned up. Management also offered a food credit which we really appreciated. Then when we got back to the room there were more ants in the shower. We also saw them in the shower, all over the bathroom, and counter every day. We did end up getting more money off and learned to live with the ants. |- The pool area was nice and there were a ton of towels. It was nice to order from the restaurant/bar and eat at the pool. However, the drinks weren’t good. I tried two (margarita and mule) and I couldn’t drink them. My kids food was very mediocre but the dessert was great. I wouldn’t suggest eating here if not staying at the hotel. |- The beach is great. They bring you lawn chairs and umbrella and towels and had boogie boards. So fun and easy to walk out and enjoy. |- Housekeeping did a great job cleaning and making beds. The room condition definitely wasn’t a housekeeping issue. |- We LOVED this area. After spending time in the village this quiet/chill street was perfect. There is coffee and a ton restaurants within a couple minute walk. We loved the less crowded and busy vibe than if we had stayed elsewhere. Definitely recommend. We loved the coffee at brick and bell, pizza at dough mama was good as was ice cream at scoops. Lunch at shore house was good. On Saturday there was a little market at the park next door. The playground was also great for the kids. |- Everywhere we went in SD during our stay was easy to get to and we never encountered a lot of traffic. The parking garage was easily accessible. |- Overall, the grounds were very pretty and the location 20/10. Most employees we encountered were friendly. But I’m not sure we would stay here again due to the run down rooms vs. the cost for the type of room we wanted. If you don’t stay in a corner ocean front I think the cost is more in line with the quality though - just know what to expect! Our stay was a 4 star as we did enjoy ourselves but the hotel...

Where to start? I called to make a reservation for our 1st wedding anniversary and while speaking to 3 different people everything seemed to be set up. The gentleman who had taken my reservation confirmed that I would have a 3rd floor ocean view king bed room and that the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries would be delivered and set up in the room along with the ordered flowers before our arrival. He then transferred me to a lady who placed the order for the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. She as well confirmed that everything would be set up for our arrival and the surprise for my wife.|Upon arrival I learn that my room is on the first floor, no champagne or strawberries were set up and to make things worse, they put us in the worst room possible on the first floor with the view of the ocean and sunset obstructed by a large plant and poles. When I called the front desk to ask about the reservation, champagne and strawberries I was told they will have to look into things and call me back. I was hoping to be having the champagne and strawberries while we enjoyed the sunset from our balcony but by the time they got back to me it was too late and I was told that the strawberries would take 2 hours to make for the chocolate to harden. As far as the room and being changed to a bottom floor room, out of their control and they don't promise any rooms. Well, then why did 3 people confirm my room choice on the phone when I made the reservations? They could not explain that to me. So the next best option was to have them make the chocolate covered strawberries while we were out at dinner and have them along with the strawberries set up while we were out. |Well, to my surprise... no champagne or strawberries were set up but were put in the refrigerator... Ok, so I will have to set things up, ruining any surprise for my wife...only to find that there are no champagne flutes and no bucket with ice for the champagne and the strawberries were melted as if they were just made.|I make another phone call to the front desk and explain to the lady the situation and she snaps at me that the champagne was delivered... I explained there are no flutes and that is what I am calling about. She says they will get them right to me...fast forward 30 minutes later, almost 9pm now and I decide I will go get them myself. I head to the front desk and gave the lady my name and room number and where can I go to get the flute glasses and I was promptly snapped at by her telling me they are on their way. I walk away not wanting to make a scene but they finally do arrive, 20 minutes later... |I am sorry, what a mess! How a great day turned sour.... what should have been a beautiful night turned into such a disaster.|Thank you La...
