If you're looking for the quintessential San Diego beach experience—one that offers more than just sand and waves—a visit to a beach park is a must. We spent an entire day at one of the city's most popular spots, and it was everything we hoped for and more. This is the kind of place that truly embodies the laid-back, outdoor-centric lifestyle of Southern California.
The first thing that strikes you is how well-maintained and clean the entire area is. The park is a vast expanse of lush, green grass, a welcome contrast to the golden sand just steps away. This is a game-changer for families or anyone who wants a break from the sand. We set up our picnic blanket on the grass, which was perfect for a a snack and a game of frisbee without getting everything sandy. There were plenty of clean picnic tables and benches available, making it easy to find a comfortable spot even on a busy weekend.
The park seamlessly transitions into the beach itself, which is wide, with a gentle slope into the water. The waves were calm and perfect for swimming, boogie boarding, or just wading in the shallows. The water quality felt great, and the lifeguards were visible and attentive, which adds a layer of comfort, especially when you have kids with you.
What truly elevates this beach park is the range of amenities. There are clean restrooms and outdoor showers, so you can easily rinse off the sand and saltwater before heading home. The paved boardwalk that runs along the sand is a hive of activity, with people jogging, biking, and rollerblading. You can rent bikes or surfboards nearby, and there are volleyball nets set up for friendly pickup games. It's a place where you can be as active or as relaxed as you want.
In essence, this beach park provides the best of both worlds: the beauty and tranquility of the ocean, combined with the convenience and comfort of a well-equipped park. It’s not just a place to sunbathe; it's a destination for an entire day of fun, fresh air, and quintessential San Diego vibes. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this spot is an absolute gem and a perfect example of what makes San Diego...
Read moreEverything is lovely about this beach there's parking although you must wait in line patiently for the next spot and there are bathrooms individual stalls with doors. It's still a bathroom at the beach situation. But there is bathroom. Also the sand is hard pack so it's much easier to walk on. They do have lifeguards which is wonderful but they do leave and they announced that. You may or may not hear the announcement. The other nice thing is if you have a fire pit bowl or purposeful device you may have a fire pit if you think you're going to make firewood in the sand they have police fireman that come along and tell you to put it out for safety. Now at 10 not 10:05 but at 10 p.m. there is a metal gate they'll close and you are not going to have an announcement no one's going to tell you they're NOT going to walk around like they did with firePITand all the sudden your car is locked in that parking lot. So if you don't know that well I don't know what you're going to do if you have a baby or a no family situations. So they put a little flashing light and they do this and that....... but they don't announce it. Yes there are signs but I'll be honest with you I never saw a sign. Thankfully daughter told me of the time. But sure enough my son and his family by time they went to the bathroom and gather their things they were on the line of almost 10 p.m.. The best thing is that about 9 set your alarm to go off and find a parking spot who knows where.???? And park out there then walk back in and when your family is ready you can walk to your parked car outside of the parking. Other than that I found the...
Read moreDo you love the beach but hate the sand. La Jolla Shores is for you. Do you like the waves but get scary to swim? La Jolla Shores solves your problems. Do you like to surf, but body board is your "real" skill, you'll look like a champion here. How about a romantic walk on the beach without sand blowing in your dates hate hair? Here's the winning spot.
La Jolla Shores is packed sand rather than loose grains. It's quite an easy beach to run because it's mostly flat and non-muddy. It's like the beaches you see in the movies on Paradise Islands.
I really enjoy seeing the fire flames dance atop fire pits along the shore. There are many, many pits on this beach, first come first serve or you can bring your one. In essence this is considered the fire pit beach.
Groups of youthful people to mature age groups were socializing safely, playing fire camp games and smorse'szing.
Right up the block are eateries from pizza to fancy Italian dining. And of course ice cream choices like Thrifty's or Scoops La Jolla. Which is also famous for delectable decadent crepes.
If you love watersports, the waves and water meet any condition. From scuba diving, to snorkeling, to surfing, body board, or letting the water flow between your toes.
I'm a local and go to a beach every single week. La Jolla shores is my top two because of the packed sand and connected park, with grass, play area and walking path. Parking can be hit or miss. No designated paid parking lot. You can access the shores from the lot by the park.
Needless to say, all beaches in San Diego have...
