I had bought our stay at this lighthouse as a surprise birthday gift to my other half. I tried to pack everything that I could think of while she was working and once she got home I drive us to Fall River, Ma. For her B day gift Once at the parking area where I was told to park we were met by the owner of this beautiful B&B who soon loaded us into a boat with our items to bring (foods, drinks, cloths), and brought us out to his lighthouse. Once out into the river my better half soon saw where we heading. Once we docked at the lighthouse we were told the history of the place as well as photos of what it looked like when the Coast Guard sold the property to him and all of the work that he put into the lighthouse to make it such a beautiful place to stay. Once we were shown how to work everything from the generator , ( the USCG took out all of the electrical cables prior to the sale, you would think that it would cost them more to tear it all out rather then leaving it for the new owners and getting more money from the sale but unfortunately that was not to be.) So, as long as you have a lot of l.p. bottles for the heaters if needed during your stay and understand that this B& B stay keeps you by yourselves and you can not leave until the pick up time so make sure that you bring some wine, waters, sodas, beers, etc. foods to grill on the grill on the deck and a great partner you WILL LOVE the stay as I did. The work that was done made this lighthouse beautiful, the bedroom is right under the USCG's warning beacon which you can go up to see and walk outside at the top to see the boating teaffic, wave and then look towards the huge bridge for Rt 95 you will see another place to visit, that is once your ride comes back. The.battleship USS MASSACHUSETTS is docked right up the river along with a sub and another Navy shop as a floating museum to visit. It was pretty neat to sit on the decks of the lighthouse and wave, not only to the boaters but also those visiting the Battleship Cove and think of the history of not only these ships but also that of the area and oh yes, that infamous young lady, Lizzy Bordon whom it seems may have used a ax to kill her parents. So you can read, relax, wave away, stroll through the lighthouse and wonder how a family would have lived like this or you can watch some DVD movies or sip some wine, etc. No matter what you do you will be amazed at the work done and the continous maintenance needed to keep this lighthouse B&B up to the shape that it is in and you can not help but enjoy the quiet time that you will share on this little...
Read moreDO NOT STAY HERE: I stayed at the lighthouse for one night. That amounted to $600, and that’s with having to wait two years for my stay. The lighthouse itself was fine. If you can get around the bugs and the dust and being stranded for 24 hours in the middle of the ocean, you may enjoy yourself. My primary concern is the lack of safety aboard the lighthouse and the lack of care for same. At 7:30 in the morning, a strange man rolled up next to the lighthouse so close as if he was going to tie. I informed the owner, Kevin, that this happened and his response was, “ Oh, probably just a fisherman. I have no control over who comes up to the lighthouse because it’s public waters.” I am a young female, who was staying completely alone. No locks on the doors or windows, including the bathroom door, and this is in Fall River - one of the most dangerous cities in Massachusetts. Days after my stay, the owner decided to contact me and chew me out for not giving a $50 tip. I have no idea where $50 came into play. I would never tip anyone $50 even if they cleaned my entire bathroom with their tongue. But he kept insisting that I owed him $50 for a tip and also calling it a “fee”. I have worked in hospitality and tourism for the last five years, and I have never expected, chased a guest for, or been angry about not receiving a tip. I’ve also never stipulated the amount I was to be tipped. I found the owner wildly unprofessional, rude, and money hungry. He was not at all concerned about the safety of me or other guests for that matter. I would consider myself to be a pretty good guest. I cleaned up after myself and I even did a little extra cleaning for them, since the lighthouse really needed it. But I was met with nasty text messages days after my departure about a $50 tip that they felt entitled to. I’d also like to mention that I’m a cancer patient in my 20’s and this is a grown man who makes at least $600 a night per guest and he still had the nerve to try...
Read moreI Need more stars, this place is fantastic!
The owner, Kevin brought us out to the lighthouse and gave us a very informative tour and took some pictures from the boat that he later emailed to us. Super friendly guy and is obviously very passionate about the place.
The lighthouse itself is very cozy, there is a kitchen with stove, sink and small refrigerator, a bathroom, 2 sitting rooms (2nd & 3rd level) and a bedroom at the top right below the beacon room. And yes you can go into the beacon room and even outside onto the top walkway around the beacon. There are a few outside seating areas and an outdoor grill. In the event of bad weather there is a covered outside seating area as well.
If you are considering staying here, pack lightly, ideally everything in backpacks as you will need to climb up a ladder from the boat to get on the lighthouse. I would not recommend a large cooler, but a couple of smaller coolers is a better idea, even if you need 4 or more of them.
Also be wary that the lighthouse is completely solar powered with batteries so you need to be mindful of electricity use. There are outlets in the kitchen for charging phones and such and there is a television and DVD player in one of the sitting rooms.
It would be a bad idea to try swimming here, the currents in and out of Mt. Hope Bay move faster than they appear.
Great sunsets and sunrises and overall there is no shortage of things to look at (there are many binoculars throughout the lighthouse). On the weekends there is a fair amount of boat traffic, which isn't a bad thing, as it give you someone to wave to :)
I would recommend this to anyone as long as you can climb a ladder, and will definitely...
