when I was a kid we used to come here on field trips and now when I visit as an adult and bring my children I am immediately transported back to to when I was a child filled with wonder.
With so many areas to explore, you could spend a full day here and still feel like you didn't see it all.
They have an IMAX movie scream a planetarium a butterfly exhibit an amazing dinosaur exhibit. one of my favorite places to walk through is the exhibit that focuses on Texas wildlife and the habitats and the diversity of Texas environments.
Then right next to that is an exhibit about American Indians and natives that were in the area so it's very interesting to learn about the place that we live and what was here before not just dinosaurs and animals.
Our family are members of the museum and we make it part of a full day of activities. We can park at the Museum go inside walk around take it easy then walk across the street to Hermann Park in Miller outdoor theater have a picnic roll down the hill walkthrough the Japanese garden.
Then if we're feeling especially adventurous we can go to the zoo everything is within walking distance.
the Houston Museum of natural science and the surrounding area is my favorite place in Houston. Just be prepared if it is a nice day everybody else has the same idea to come visit but with so many areas to explore you can find little pockets that aren't so busy.
A great way to plan your day is to get there right when it opens plan out your parking if you want to park in the parking garage you have to go inside the museum to pay for it before you leave there is street parking around the facility he might have to circle a couple times to get the feel of what's available and what's open.
a little trick of the trade we like is to park in the parking garage and just suck up the cost of it sometimes it can be $20 for non-members but if you remember it's cheaper. Then walk across the street to the Hermann Park little train stop, and you can hop on the train for free finish the train ride and it lets you off close to the zoo.
Right there is a restaurant a duck pond you can go paddle boarding or just walk around Hermann Park.
if you are tired after all that you can pay for a ticket to get on the train to take you back to that first train stop by the museum and then go inside the museum and cool off get a little AC hangout look at some dinosaurs and...
Read moreThis is magical place to visit and enjoy a great off day with your family. Although, the museum is somewhat small it has it all that children love: Triceratops, simple machines to learn about science, Megadolon, a Great White Shark Figure very realistic, Stegosaurus and above all the great Tyrannosaurus Rex the real King of the Monsters, this one is huge, in fact the whole building is like made fit for the only porpuse of taking care of TREX. It does not matter if you know some about science or little, because everything is so well explained, that no matter what, you would be the perfect guide for your children and impress them with your wisdom 🥰. They even have some really interesting graphics and maps to explain about Houston the geology and where oil is and how is related to the asteroid that obliterated dinosaurs and most of animals that lived with them. They have a little shop for souvenirs and very clean and restrooms has excellent housekeeping. To tell you the truth you may take about three hours to see everything with explanations and all, but that does not mean your day is over because behind the Museum there is a little park with a little slope mount to do some cardboard box sliding and make an excellent picnic under those beautiful trees. Next to the park you have the Tailfair Lake where you can have a nice walk with your family along that beautiful neighborhood and have sightseeings of several beautiful animals like turtles, ducks, squirrels, rabbits even beavers only be mindful of not let your little children and pets to get close to the shore of the river because there are alligators and snakes there too, you know! Turtles = Alligators, and there are several signs to caution you about this. We saw no alligator nevertheless and the day was great and with a beautiful sun and sky the tickets are very affordable and allowing you to take a large group even to have a nice different birthday party there. We had a wonderful day to remember for many years to come, I recommend this little...
Read moreWe are HMNS members; we bought our membership at the Houston campus. We decided to see what the Sugar Land location had to offer. My first visit here with my kids was nice; at 5 and 9 years old, they enjoyed the exhibits and the only thing that seemed "off" in my opinion was that the dig pit cost $5. That seemed really expensive for what it was. We didn't end up doing the dig pit.
The kids enjoyed it and wanted to bring their dad back. Again it was a nice visit - we first checked to see which films would be playing in the inflatable planetarium/theater dome. The "invaders of Mars" was recommended for our family by the manager, so we planned our day around the 3:30 showtime. We arrived at the dome at 3:20 and the show had been changed. I asked what happened, and was told that another patron had asked for "dinosaur prophecy" instead so they changed the schedule. Unfortunately they didn't choose to tell the rest of us of the change, so here we are ready to watch a film and it's not going to play.
The manager apologized and offered us dig pit tickets. I told him I wasn't looking to get anything, but I was disappointed that we weren't going to be able to see the film (which, as it turns out HE had actually been the one to describe the different films for the day and HE is the one who recommended the Mars Invaders film based on our kids' ages).
It was a sad way to end our day. It was actually our last day of our membership so this is the taste that's left in our mouth. We will not be renewing. Maybe in the future we will reconsider because I believe in supporting the cause, but for now the mismanagement has...
