Having won a membership card from another amazing local business (Livâs Drink Emporium) and knowing my knees and hips were in dire need of help, I decided to give yoga here a try for the first time ever. I was a doubter for sure, more invested in tai chi and very uncertain if yoga fit for me.
The space is lovely and calming and staff and the owner Yogi Amy greeted me first thing. They were very welcoming with a quick tour and review and some directions about their grounding ritual. I set my stuff down and did the ritual and was greeted and similarly welcomed by several other patrons who I told I was new.
The session (slow flow) was delightful. The calming accepting space, gracious encouragement and support of Yogi Amy allowed me to muddle my way through the class learning as I went and with no feelings of judgment or awkwardness. The music is engaging soft and smooth without being trippy. Did I sweat? Oh yeah! Did I do everything? Heck no! None of it mattered because I felt accomplished just being there and doing something. The cold scented towel at the end and closing ritual was the perfect way to end. I stayed for a Sound Bath session which was a lovely meditative cool down. Several patrons checked in with me afterward to see how it went. There is definitely a warm and friendly community here even though I was the only male other than the owners son. I definitely felt like this helped loosen up my body after way too much painful inactivity.
I hung out for a bit in the inviting lobby space in a hanging swinging chair and could see myself doing that in the future with a cup of tea before or after class.
I returned for a more challenging class (Flow) which was a bit warmer and more work. Once again friendly staff and patrons who all were supportive and encouraging got me through to the end with a similar sense of accomplishment (and more sore muscles).
I canât wait to try the aroma yin session.
Skeptical as I was, Twisted Grit lives its ideals and mission. It is a place for anyone and everyone. Iâm definitely interested in continuing my journey....
Read moreDeeply grateful for this space in the Sun Prairie/east Madison area! A welcoming environment for EVERYONE! Zero experience or understanding of yoga required to walk in. The staff are friendly and welcoming and it's easy to let go of nerves when you walk in-they literally have arrows and "step 1, step 2, etc" drawn on the floor to help you navigate your way if you're new. (this extra step to make it an inclusive environment is just one example of many sprinkled throughout the business and space to support their goal of getting yoga to everyone who wants/needs/could benefit from-which is everyone).
Environment is calm, peaceful and inviting.
Instructors offer great cuing, are friendly and approachable and can guide you no matter what level of experience.
I personally love the hotter classes-the heat is fantastic.
I followed Yogi Amy over and have practiced at a few places over the years. Any time I want extra guidance from deepening my physical practice to exploring what came up during a class, I've been met with open and supportive Instructors.
Something I LOVE about this business is how much they care about mental health and self-care. They often say at the start of classes "making it to the mat is the most challenging part"...and it's totally true! When I go to a yoga class, my whole family seems happier...because I'm happier. I can navigate my day and emotions much better when I've chosen to take care of myself. This isn't always a choice that's made easily, but the benefits are truly a game changer!
Personal favorite classes: Slow Core Tuesdays with Crystal-her expertise on strengthening your core and pelvic floor is incredible!

Read moreI highly, highly recommend TGY for anyone! I've been interested in Yoga for a long time but every studio, despite claims that it's open to all, has been very difficult to feel a part of, and intimidating to start. TGY and especially the owner, Amy, have made a truly inclusive environment that is open to ANYONE regardless of skill level, body shape, gender, race, etc. Even as an overweight man (not your typical Yoga person) I feel welcomed and encouraged every time I attend a class.
The space is gorgeous, amenities clean and modern, and the rooms are well maintained and decorated. The instructors (especially Amy) really go out of their way to suggest modifications, help you if you're a beginner/struggling, and make the class completely about you and your personal needs, not just going through the motions of a one-size-fits-all approach.
Because of this, most of the other clients are also super friendly, and have a wide range of experience and body types, so you'll never be alone in where you're at, and always have someone to have a chat with. You'll be gently and politely encouraged to push yourself without being pressured to go beyond your capabilities, as well as constantly reminded to listen to your body and do what feels right for you - and will leave feeling well exercised and calm.
If you're like me and interested in Yoga but feel a bit over your head, I can't recommend TGY enough as a super...
