The Grand offers a unique and enriching movie-going experience. Unlike mainstream theaters, it showcases a curated selection of films, including Oscar-nominated and independent titles, catering to diverse tastes. The theater's commitment to quality is evident in its comfortable seating and excellent sound system, ensuring an immersive viewing experience. The staff at The Grand Cinema are known for their friendliness and dedication. Attendants are attentive and knowledgeable, enhancing the overall experience. The theater also offers a variety of concessions, including freshly popped popcorn made with coconut oil and special seasonings, as well as a selection of local beers and wines. For those interested in supporting local cinema, The Grand Cinema provides a membership program that offers discounted ticket prices and other benefits. The theater's commitment to community engagement and its focus on quality films make it a standout choice for movie enthusiasts in the Tacoma area. Tips: Get a coffee and exceptional pastry next door at Corina Bakery next door. Have an after movie drink at the Dystopian Brewery one block away. Enjoy lunch or dinner at Red Star Taco one block down hill on 6th and St Helens.

First time visitor and would give 4 rather than 5⭐s because those who have wheelchair or walker are challenged to enter/exit an individual theater bay because there are steps at the entry although to enter the whole theater there is a ramp. However there maybe alternatives but I did not inquire. I was concerned for a woman who was struggling with her wheeled walker to exit the bay. Otherwise, this is a classic old-school theater with updated comfortable seats and cup holders. In the reception area lots of memorabilia and simple but nice selection of treats, wine, and locally sourced ice cream. Would come back not only for the cinematic niche & artistic movies shown here but also for the tasty popcorn. The servers treat the popcorn with care including the butter. Nice touch.

Staffed by the most amazing volunteers ever! We were provided free headphones which provided descriptive audio and also volume control for both the visually impaired and hard of hearing in our group. I was offered free coffee from the members lounge even though it was my first visit here and I am not even a member. Next time I will be sure to bring some cash for the donation box. Friendly environment, sparkling clean and very retro. I will definitely return.

We love seeing movies here—usually once a week. They always have the best films—documentaries, art films, independent films, foreign films, classic films, etc.

They give back to the community with regular free film screenings, reduced or free screenings for students, and speakers after some films.

Currently, they have a discounted admission on Thursday nights ($6) and there are other discounts available to members ($5 movies on Mondays and free small popcorn).

They are staffed by volunteers who take their jobs seriously and run by a board that doesn’t take themselves too seriously. We love the mini films shown during the previews made by the Board & staff that convey their values or goals.

Their website makes it extremely easy to buy tickets for reserved seating. The seating is comfortable, however, being an historic theater, the incline of the floor is shallow, sometimes making it difficult for my 5’ frame to see over the person in front of me. Usually the theater isn’t so crowded that changing seats is a problem. (This isn’t allowed by the theater because of reserved seating, but it isn’t...

A neighbor mentioned this very important documentary titled “Ithaka” would be playing here so a friend of mine and I went to see it. This film is about the family of Julian Assange working tirelessly to help him regain his freedom. His father (& brother) travel across the world campaigning for him and bringing awareness to his dire situation. He’s currently facing a very lengthy prison sentence for revealing war crimes through wikileaks. As an independent investigative journalist myself who shares hidden truths, I was very interested to see this film for a better understanding. “Seattle for Assange” was present and to our surprise, the family of Julian Assange was also there! His father and brother spoke to the viewing audience after the film. You can hear some of what they said on my podcast “We Do Not Consent Worldwide“. This was truly an unforgettable experience. I want to send a big thank you to everyone involved in the creation of this film and to “The Grand Cinema” for providing the space to make it happen. The customer service is superb and the theater is very quaint. Highly...
