Ypao Beach — Attraction in Tamuning Municipality

This was my go-to beach for the 2+ months I stayed in Guam. It was walking distance from my lodging. I mostly came here to swim (like open water sport swimming), and for this, it was great... except for the trigger fish. I encountered aggressive trigger fish several times and even got nipped at a few times. The thing to know about aggressive trigger fish is that this happens when they feel their territory is being threatened, so the thing to do if you're being attacked is to swim laterally (not up) away from its territory. I think there are a few different kinds of trigger fish here at Ypao, but I've only experienced the Picasso kind being aggressive.

Other than that, it's a beautiful beach with lots of cool fish and coral. I have seen people feeding the fish, and they seem generally comfortable around people. I even saw a sea turtle once.

Users are a mix of tourists and locals. The beach can get somewhat crowded on weekends, but during the week, it's usually pretty mellow. The current can be strong, so be advised. Water can be cloudy or crystal clear depending on conditions.

A.nice beach to enjoy the nice Guam ocean with kids. Bring snorkel gear so you can enjoy the underwater world a little. Although most of the coral is gone, there are still things to admire underwater 😊. Also, don't forget to bring water and food if you plan to stay longer than 2 hours as there are no food vendors present. Also, sadly the public showers are basically non-functional as Gov Guam does NOT keep their beaches tourist friendly for some reason (probably money related). Last tip (and warning); wear reef walkers or similar as there is usually trash left over, including glass 😮‍💨, from other guests to the beach😔...truly wish the park service would keep it all clean...
