I can't help but reflect on the historically missed opportunity to preserve the yards in Tiburon for use by Sonoma Marin Area Rapid Transit (SMART). The potential benefits of having a fully operational SMART hub in this picturesque town are truly remarkable. The vast space provided by the former yards could have played a pivotal role in not just making Tiburon a station stop for SMART trains, but also a hub for essential maintenance and expansion of the SMART rail network. The possibilities were endless:
Maintenance and Repairs: With ample space, SMART could have efficiently stored, repaired, and maintained its train fleet, ensuring reliability and safety. This would have minimized downtime due to maintenance issues, improving overall service quality. Track Maintenance: Having dedicated facilities for track maintenance vehicles and equipment would have guaranteed the smooth operation of the rail network. Timely maintenance is crucial for passenger safety and service reliability. Expanded Rolling Stock: Tiburon's yards could have accommodated additional rolling stock, allowing SMART to increase service frequency. This would have encouraged more people to use public transportation, reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact. Seamless Connectivity: The proximity of a SMART station to Golden Gate Transit and SamTrans bus stops would have created a seamless intermodal transportation hub. Commuters could easily transfer between buses and trains without inconvenience. Ferry Connection: Tiburon's location within walking distance of the ferry terminal is a golden opportunity for commuters traveling from San Francisco's Ferry Building. A direct connection to the SMART rail network would have further enhanced the convenience of public transportation.
Imagine a future where Tiburon serves as a model for efficient, integrated public transportation, benefiting both residents and visitors. It's unfortunate that this potential has been missed, but it's never too late for local authorities and transportation agencies to reconsider the importance of Tiburon in the SMART network. While the opportunity may have been lost in the past, we can hope that future planning will take into account the advantages of utilizing this historic location for the greater benefit of the entire region. Tiburon has the potential to be a vital link in the SMART rail network, connecting Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area like never before. Let's not miss this...
Read moreHistory lessons can be sometimes boring. Not here! The staff were very friendly and accommodating even though we arrived only 10 mins prior to closing time. They took time to tell the 100-year history of the town and it was both informative and fun.
No entry fee but there is a suggested donation of $5. Just drop the donation in the jar if you feel like it.
Kids would love it (as an adult, I did too). The models do work so just ask them for a demo.
Well...

Pictures and displays, including a working replica of what the railroad in fairy operation looked like in the early 1900s before the Golden Gate Bridge was built. Absolutely worth...
