I have wanted to come check out the Birdcage Theatre since I saw it many many years ago as a teen on one of many ghost hunting shows, not only was I so interested in the history of this amazing building with seemingly endless stories of tragedy and passion in its many forms but also of course the lives and history of the people, men an women alike who spent their time in this establishment. We opted for the ghost hunting tour and were so lucky to end up being the only ones on the tour. We had to purchase a 3rd ticket so the tour would run and let me tell you it was absolutely worth it. Not only was our guide so kind and incredibly personable but she was so knowledgeable of the stories of some of the most well known people who still linger in the birdcage. Every inch of this place is riddled with stories-and bulletholes. After our incredibly informative guided tour we sat in the main room behind the stage with some ghost hunting equipment and the lights were all turned out. The energy at no point was negative, the flashlights were the most active part of the session, with some intermittent attention from the k2 meters on the table in front of us and the rem pod set up by the stairs chiming to get our attention a few times. Though the patrons and performers may not be in our same plane anymore they certainly still enjoy entertainment! After our guide had told us a story earlier in the night of them wanting to hear her sing,I decided to ask myself if they would like a song, it was so much fun to see the flashlights flickering and lighting up as I sang. I wouldnt miss the ghost tour as it was a truly special experience and was the highlight of our trip to the area. I just hope I can find my way through to hop on one of the ghost tours again!

It’s a step back in time when you enter the Bird Cage Theatre. One of the only surviving original buildings on a historic street, with a wild and bawdy history of its own. This spot is famous for being haunted, and the hosts are proud of that reputation. We chose a self-guided walk through versus the hosted ghost tour. The memorabilia inside is plentiful and interesting. Dusty old furniture, tools and personal effects of the local VIPs, miners, merchants, cowboys, gunslingers and saloon gals from days gone by. Educational and authentic, but is it haunted? My answer is...maybe. I’m an empath and I’ve had many unique experiences in several places, both historic and commonplace, over the years. Here, I felt some very strong energy in one spot, and lesser energy in a few other spots. That said, I can’t claim that these vibrations in the ether equate to active or “intelligent” spirits. Intriguing, yes, and it made our visit that much more fun. We also had a interesting conversation with the gift shop clerk, who has no doubt that there are unseen folks who still reside in the Bird Cage. At the least, it’s a slightly creepy museum of “preserved decay” and a slice of the old American Southwest. Go and decide for yourself about the ghosts. 👻

The history of this place was very interesting and quite amazing actually. The staff presenting the history in the front room made the self guided tour sound very enticing, so we took it. Sadly the back rooms did not live up to the hype. the middle room was a big disappointment, tons of artifacts crammed in without any thought to create a simulation of what it would have been like. I would rather have seen them attempt replicate the room to what it would have looked like in it's heyday. In the third section the write ups about the various performers who had played at the Birdcage was very interesting. Fourth section consisted of the original rooms that were part of the brothel. When the silver mines closed the women just walked out and left everything as is, they had expected the mines to re-open up and they never did. Advise...... stop at the intro they give in the front, that was the best part.

Some people come here for the haunted experiences but I came here for the general history (to my understanding, I didn't see any ghosts). The place is nearly all original with the original foundations and man does it show. It was also fun looking for all of the bullet holes scattered throughout the building, most of them being on the ceiling and upper walls, 1 on the bar counter too. There's an attendant who will tell the story of the building every couple of minutes to people who just wandered in, and they'll answer any questions you may have. Beyond the entrance room requires $15 per person to tour the rest of the building, which I felt was a little steep but I suppose it goes to maintenance and conservation. Pictures and video is allowed, if not encouraged (they like seeing the "ghost pictures"), and you're allowed as much time as you want. There is a gift shop at the very end.
