Southside Mall Cinemas is the only place near Oneonta to see movies. As long as you attend with reasonable expectations that this is a theater in a small town you will be pleasantly surprised. At this point I think just about all except maybe one of the showing rooms is equipped with very comfy and roomy recliners (like AMC) that are well spaced for ample room. As a result, the theater seating is exceptionally accessible for those with disabilities. However, I don't think the bathrooms or theater doors have access switches/buttons. Also, the view from anywhere in the theater is good and I haven't found any audio dead zones any time I have seen a movie here. The picture quality seems up to standard, I believe they use Sony 4k projectors and screens.
The concessions stand has the expected movie snacks you would expect from popcorn and soda to slushies, candy, and some hot food such as nachos and hotdogs. Also, as you would expect, the food prices are high but quite affordable compared to other theaters (~$16 for a large popcorn and 2 large sodas that come with refills).
My only complaint is the outdated bathrooms. They have regular residential doors that do not have any closing mechanism and in the men's room there is a single urinal and stall. While this is perfectly functional, there is no automatic flush (1st world problems, I know, but if I can avoid having to turn and hold the knob open on the urinal to flush before eating popcorn I will). Similarly, the sink uses manual knobs instead of an automatic faucet which again I would prefer strictly for sanitary reasons. Nonetheless, I always have a good movie going experience here and would recommend Southside Mall Cinemas to anyone.
Accessibility - 4/5 - no accessibility switches or automatic closing doors on bathrooms, however, no stairs and great seating
Cleanliness - 5/5 - always clean when I attend
Price - 5/5 - fair, affordable pricing
Atmosphere - 4/5 - fantastic seating and viewing angles throughout, not the most rumbling bass or most intense theater sound I have ever experienced but still very good. Remember, this isn't IMAX but it is a very comfy and thoroughly enjoyable...
Read moreI went to see Avatar 2 last night. The theater was fairly comfortable.. My review is basicly about the quality of the movie i paid to watch (and quite a bit for the entire family in 3d). For one, the light are supposed to go down when tje trailers start. The trailers are part of the movie going experience. A lot of trailers are first shown in cinemas. So when you have all the theater lights on you are jipping everyone of the experience of first seeing them. Two, whoever set up the picture made it look horrible. The "smooth motion" effect was set way to high.. (Yeah the same one on your home tv) . So actually getting into the story and enjoying the film was hard because i kept being pulled out due to the way it looked. I own a 3d home theater setup and trust me when i say its not supposed to look like that. All the motion looked extremely odd because someone didnt know how to set it up correctly..i dont go to the theaters often and this is why.. Because i have a better setup at home. A movie theater should have better picture than my home tv and when it doesnt im not impressed. Especially for a movie like Avatar. I was in theater 9 if that helps anyone. I dont think it matters. I remember it being the same way years ago.. Which is one of the reasons i got the home setup i did. They need to have a professional come in and adjust their equipment... And ill add this... Reclining seats in a 3d setup are great.. Sure... If they weren't 10 feet from the screen.. Even for a non 3d setup they are way to close and not enough. Id prefer to pay a higher ticket price for a theater with recliners throughout.. Ive been going to southside cinemas since 1992..when i go to the movies i go there... Ive seen all the improvements theyve done... But dont stop.. It can be...
Read moreIs it a new thing for them to check your purse!?? I was cut off mid order demanding I have my purse checked for food, as I'm ordering food! It was very odd and made me feel kind of uncomfortable. If I am asked again I will not give permission for them to look into my bag, I was very caught off guard so I let him glance in there. There was a lady next to us who had kids and two backpacks with her which I'm sure was stuffed with food and water. Meanwhile it was just my husband and I who just wanted to watch a movie and get some popcorn. My purse was half the size of that ladies backpack. Along with searching my bag he...
