I’ve been coming to this store for 8 years , and after today I will never come here again. I write this as a warning to anyone else who fit the profile
Beginning one day in July 2023 , I went into the store to grab a few things. I don’t get a lot at one time because I walk to and from since I live in the neighborhood next to the spectrum. Well the actual shopping went fine but when I got to the self checkout machines then this guy walks up behind me and stands two feet behind me and watches me scan my items. Without saying a word. After I pay he then leaves and still says nothing.
The second time the same thing happened but it was an older lady and she too sad nothing. It was very uncomfortable.
For context I usually have a backpack with me so I can put the groceries I buy into my backpack so it’s easier to carry. I’m also Native American. I work 6 days a week and am taking online college classes.
Today, not even an hour ago I walk into the store and I’m wearing black pants and a black hoodie and a black beanie since it’s cold and I also had my backpack. I was looking around and I walked to the milk section and grabbed a half gallon of horchata, which is what I usually get there. As I start walking towards the registers this guy, whom I’ve said hi to before, comes up to me and asks in a casual manner “how you doing? They told me that you’re banned from being in here”. I reply in a confused manner:” what do you mean what are you talking about ?” He says “they don’t want you coming to the store because you’ve been stealing before” I was incredulous now and said “are you serious? I come here multiple times a week and have been shopping here for years and I’ve never stolen anything. Can I see the evidence that you have that proves I’ve stolen anything “ he says “I’m going to have to insist not to, but one of our associates witnessed you stealing”
At this point I was angry because I’m being treated like I’m some criminal thief and being accused of something I’ve never done once. The guy asked what I was Here to get and I said horchata. He said that you can do that and you can come back little by little till we can trust you. So I say “so you guys are profiling me ?” And he immediately says “come on man I’m Chicano this isn’t profiling “ and I cut him off and told him “it’s doesn’t matter what you are, you’re still profiling me and making accusations against me without actual proof and you’re saying one person saw me steal something, well what did I steal? “ he deflected the question and said “I’ll walk you to the registers so you can pay and we can start trying to build trust”
As I I was paying I was angry and said “I’ve always shopped here and have never stolen anything and because I fit your profile and going off one witness I’m being treated this way” he said “you can still come back so we can build up trust” I said “no I’m not going to do that, this is insulting and wrong to treat someone as a criminal when I’ve been a honest customer to your store for years, no thank you” and he said “well I’m sorry you feel that way” and I left and will never go back.
If you go to this store, go to another location. They profile people and make baseless accusations without providing proof. Imo this is very ghetto and a very ghetto way to handle situations like these. I’ve never been more insulted and humiliated before in my life. I will be making a call to an attorney about this.
This is not how you treat honest working class people....
Read moreGood selection of produce and it all looks fresh. Bad service. Taking my elderly mom shopping is my pleasure but has specific challenges especially with mobility but also with hearing, being slow to answer, and slow moving. If you are elderly or otherwise mobility impaired, this store is NOT for you. They don't bother to bring carts from the parking lot to the storefront for shopper convenience. We ate at the instore Cafe and there were no carts upon arrival. When we were leaving the Cafe, we asked a cashier for help getting a cart (mom's idea). We left since no carts were coming. We came back 1/2 an hour later to order another cocido for take away (again mom's idea) and still no carts. In total about 1.5 hours of no carts available. There were ladies walking in looking around for carts but not finding any, and there was even a guy in there using a Target cart from next door! A STORE MANAGER is undoubtedly aware that no one is on cart duty and simply does nothing about it. Take note, many elderly people depend on walkers for mobility so when they go grocery shopping, they depend on a GROCERY CART in order to walk around your store. Many disabled people cannot wrangle their own cart from the whereabouts of your parking lot.
Food City is not serving the public equally. If you are MOBILITY IMPAIRED, forget it!!
Regarding the service at the in store Cafe, the counter person was obviously unhappy and treated my poor mom with impatience. Her mask, the noise, mom's bad hearing, and the attendant's unhelpful spirit were a big Zero. Cocido was tasty but barely lukewarm. Definitely...
Read moreI am a very picky person when it comes to Mexican Food, so I must share this place for Mexican guisados and the fried plantains they have here at the deli inside The Food City on Irvington and I-10… Please try their food, I like the way they prepare certain dishes and they always have a variety to chose from.Their Mexican aguas frescas are also delicious, and last but not least the menudo and pozoles look very tasty, haven’t tried those yet but I hear they are also wonderful. I would like to commend a lady who’s always there to take out order her name is Maria, she is simply a delight to talk to. Always very attentive, friendly and so helpful, love her customer service abilities.. Visit when you get a chance, you won’t be disappointed, they know how to cook and season our wonderful traditional dishes magnificently, highly recommend them…If you enjoy the meal you get when you visit don’t stop yourself from letting the manager know how it was!!! I’m often disappointed with many restaurants throughout the city, they charge you so much money for food that sometimes isn’t even edible, think about it, how many times you’ve felt that way… This place is a find you will be glad to hear about!!! Come see Maria, she will be happy to recommend some dishes, they got it...
