5 stars for effort. The play is a Tulsa staple. I feel that all Tulsan's owe it to themselves to watch the show. Just once, go and watch the show.
In my opinion, I would recommend "pre-gaming" before the show. The actors encourage audience feedback during the show. So I feel you would enjoy the show and the environment more, if you enjoyed a couple of cocktails prior to attending the show. Obviously drink responsibly, but it will help.
The play takes place during the time period leading up to prohibition in the United States. It is over the top and requires audience participation/interaction. The show takes about three hours, or so we were told. We had dinner reservations so only caught about a half of the show.
I attended the show on 12/11/2021. There is an actor who looks like Jack Black. He plays a hillbilly type character. He is the saving grace for this production. Totally hilarious and he really carries the show. The villan character does this funny thing with his mustache during the audience participation part. It is so funny every time he does it. There was an older character that wore a top hat as part of his costume. I don't know if his mic was not working, but I felt so bad for him. You could not understand or hear anything he was saying.
The actors put on a decent show. The production is low budget community theater. Think dinner theater with airline snacks and beverages as the meal.
It's cute and campy and totally unexpected. Each experience will be different, depending on the audience and the actors that evening. Just grab some friends, pre-game, and enjoy a show. Tip your waitress...
Read moreThe show in itself was hysterically funny, and you want to make sure you pay to get tomatoes for throwing at the villian! This is good, clean, fun about the prohibition Era. There's also on-purpose-out-of-tune-piano music accompaniment and sing-along.
Parking is on the street (Riverside) in front of the building. From the from off the building, there's a walk from the street up to the building, and then a half staircase of stone to climb. I think there may be another entrance on the side of the building that's easier to manage for the handicapped if you park in back. Call first and ask.
Once inside, space is limited and may bother someone with claustrophobia. A small snack bar is on the first floor where you can purchase soda, water, coffee, ice cream, bars, etc. Tip: buy a coffee and take home a mug! You can also order from your seat during the show.
There is an additional half staircase to climb to the 2nd floor where the show is. There may be an elevator, but I wasn't looking for one. Seating is at tables and chairs, and the piano is in the same room. Lights will dim during the show, but the stage lights are bright enough.
There are 2 or 3 short intermissions, and you can get your throwing tomatoes during the last one. They'll come around to your table to offer them.
Be sure and actively participate in all the interactive parts for the best experience, and don't forget to tip...
Read moreWhat an incredibly fun evening! If you're planning on being in Tulsa on a weekend, get yourself tickets to this wonderful all-volunteer Vaudeville-style theater! Live piano playing with singalong to old-time songs for the whole crowd (they supply booklets with all the words!), and audience participation (booing the villain, cheering the hero, etc.) including the option to purchase fake tomatoes to throw at the villain (when prompted). Light snacks such as chips, pretzels, and candy are available for purchase, as well as a selection of beer, soft drinks, and coffee. If you purchase the bottomless coffee for $8, you get to keep a great souvenir mug! The theater itself is a beautiful historic building built in 1928, located on Riverside, so there's the added bonus of a lovely location to enjoy as well! As a point of caution, the seating area is very well-filled on a sold-out night, not an issue for me, but those who suffer from claustrophobia or PTSD would be very uncomfortable, I believe. Everyone is seated at little tables, and servers check in with you throughout the evening. I went solo and had a little table to myself. I would absolutely give this great evening 5+ stars and 2...
