One of the few parks in eastern Loudoun, and thank goodness the county purchased it from the WWF in the 1990s, because they were going to turn it into housing. The park features many historical buildings such as the Lanesville House, the restored Old School House, and Frogshackle cabin, all of which are open certain days of the year for open house. There are many miles of trails winding through the park, leading to Sterling Boulevard, Cascades Parkway, Juniper Avenue, and Park View High School. There is a nature section (which is the majority) with ponds, forest, meadows, and the nice views from Little Stony Mountain, a section for sports (baseball/softball, fields for soccer and lacrosse), the Heritage Farm Museum (which is not related to the park at all), and the CMP recreation centre, which charges for passes to use their swimming, basketball, track, weight room facilities, etc. I would highly recommend a visit to this park during any time of the year, though there are events throughout the year such as Holiday in the Park, Olde Time Fourth of July, Fall Festival, and fishing tournament in the summer to name a few. The visitors and interpretive centre has some animals and activities for kids, as well as colonial and Native American artefacts, trail maps, and restrooms with water fountains. The park runs many camps throughout the summer utilising the other buildings and facilities, and the children seem to always be having a good time, which may be disturbing the peace on a calm day, but isn’t too bad. One of the best parks in...
Read moreI have seen parks in the middle of cities that were more beautiful, peaceful, cleaner and better maintained. My husband and I here temporarily for work, stopped at Claude Moore Park to take a hike on their trails and enjoy some natural scenery - it is hard to find nature in Sterling. And we didn't really find what we were looking for here. The "trail" is a gravely driveway with construction vehicles. As we walked we heard loud bass techno music and found out it came from players in a field practicing nearby. The "pond" is a mucky brown body of water littered with garbage and you need to trek through an abundance of mud and goose droppings to get near. As we approached there was a couple in the grass making out hardcore - probably in goose poo. How romantic. It's a shame because its such a big park and there aren't many close to where we are living. I only gave it two stars because it has a field big enough for my hubby to fly his heliocopter (relax, its not a "drone"). But as we were leaving there was a huge bee that we couldn't shake and it crept into my car door exterior somehow. I heard buzzing every time I got out of the car the rest of the day. We love nature, but there are bees everywhere at this park. Not pleasant to...
Read moreLove this place extremely clean and the lawn is always manicured perfect. I love fishing and jogging here. Great fishing in clean water. Lots of cats and blue gill. I see giant carp swimming by all the time but I've never really fished for carp. My friend does. He caught one this past summer but it broke his hook. Probably about 30lbs. I even caught a giant snapping turtle this year. Fortunately he didn't swollen the hook and I was able to safety return him to the water. I even caught a pond turtle this year. Same luck. The hook was easley removed without injuring the turtle. I was happy. By the way I've never seen anyone sleeping on the benches. I think someone was confused about where they were. Definitely not here. Great place to bring your children for a picnic and exercise. Very clean. I love snakes and they have a gorgeous corn snake inside the visiting center along with other interesting artefacts including clothes from the years past with documents telling stories about the items. I actually handled the corn snake years ago while volunteering at the park....
