I've been climbing at Sportrock with my family for about 10 years and we've been members for 8 of those. There are few equals for the quality of routes in my experience. Climbed in a lot of gyms, across the country, and the route setting is way, way above average. The routes usually last less than two months but given the size of the gym there are new routes, by section, every week or so. Staff is mostly cool - more so laid back at Sterling than Alexandria in my opinion, but we are just looking to be left alone and we are. Yoga, gym equipment and party rooms available, but for us it is all about climbing. To that end, junior teams, classes, competitions, annual member appreciation event mean you can get as involved as you are ambitious. My daughter and I climb weekly and so the membership brings down the cost significantly over paying walk-up rates. Really convenient hours as well as well members-only times - they don't force non-members to leave so they moved members only to the mornings which makes sense I guess. We tend to climb on weekends so kid parties and other such activities can get a bit annoying but I also understand they need to make money. Looking forward to the amazing renovations currently underway at Alexandria which sound and look incredible - big up to Lillian for her commitment and investment to take on such revolutionary changes...and for taking membership feedback into account in influencing future plans. They've Come along way and seem dedicated to...
Read morePretty rough trying to find a spot to climb after 5pm. Not trying weekends. With competition climbers and GROUPS of kids you REALLY have to wait n work around to bolder. i was spoiled coming from VA beach..
Most of the experience is the rope climbing for sure. There's a learning curve but this hobby beats the bank acct murder $180+ membership crossfit & martial arts around here.
Keep in mind every time you start a membership you are obligated a 49$ fee. For what i don't understand. Canceling membership must be done 6 DAYS BEFORE end of the month or you are donating 90$ to this company.
The gym section is pretty nice, big enough. There's a small crossfit type section thats great idea but too small for anything more than lifting in the squat rack, careful of others around you. Having outdoor equipment would be awesome but im sure that would surpass waiver requirements n risks.
I'd say boldering wall needs some work but ive little experience to say how to improve that. In the summer a deskman was often clowning screaming Thru the gym to scare some kids. that shjt is unwelcome
The yoga/auxillary room events are Great. The calisthenic community is one to be...
Read moreMy daughter came here for a birthday party. We had signed a waiver online in advance and got the confirmation. When we arrived, We were told that they didn't have the waiver. We told them we did it online and they said OK, They would find it. 10 minutes later we got a text from the hostess of the party that they did not have the waiver, so we would have to come back and sign one so that our daughter could climb. We came back and signed, at were told that there was no problem, that they had been letting her climb meanwhile. That not only turned out not to be true, it turned out they never bothered to inform the people in the back that the waiver was signed a second time, so she still wasn't allowed to climb. By the time we sorted this out, the party was nearly over, she was crying and didn't want to climb after waiting almost an hour. No apology from anyone. I'd give negative...
