I felt compelled to write a review after it took multiple days over 3-4 weeks to register my vehicle in the District. When moving from out of state, there is no electronic titling, so you must call the bank to have the physical title mailed to them. You also must bring other paperwork not explained in person by the DMV staff (so use the website) and mentioned (but not described) on the website (so Google anything you are not absolutely 100% sure about). Key is that your bank must also provide a copy of your loan/lien contract (they are the same thing).
If you do not happen to have the correct documents, you will have to wait in a line that extends outside just to take a number, then wait again until you get to the counter to speak with someone surly, and be told you do not have the correct documents (and this is from someone organized with record-keeping). The only saving grace is you can call the bank (which functions well and responds immediately) to have them email documents while you are waiting there. I would have been incredibly frustrated if I’d had to leave to do this and return later.
Overall 2 stars for the total hours spent over multiple days acquiring extensive documentation that is not well described by the personnel nor the website, as well as hours of waiting and waiting. I have lived in a few other states and the process of registering a vehicle here is easily the most cumbersome and time-consuming. Maybe DC needs another service center to offload some of the...
Read moreI traveled down to DC from New York City to help my mom get her new vehicle registered and tagged at the DMV located on Washington Avenue in NE Washington, DC. From start to finish, this experience far exceeded our expectations.
We arrived early in the morning, hoping to be among the first to be serviced. Although we were #7 in line, the security guards greeted us with kindness, making the wait pleasant. Once the facility opened, there was a brief delay as the computers were down, but the team worked quickly, and within 15 minutes, everything was up and running.
Our customer service representative, Kay, was incredibly helpful and professional. Initially, we faced a roadblock when we discovered that our lienholder had not sent the car’s title to the DMV. Feeling defeated, we gathered the necessary information and prepared to handle the situation later. However, as we were about to leave, Kay called us back with great news—they had found my mom’s title in the system! Kay and his supervisor went above and beyond to double-check the records, and their extra effort turned our frustrating morning into a successful one.
After spending just 20 more minutes finishing up paperwork, we were on our way to inspect the vehicle. I’m so thankful for Kay and his supervisor for their dedication and willingness to help. This DMV location truly deserves 5 stars for their excellent customer service. Thank you again for making this experience as smooth...
Read moreI probably should give it a 4th star but... I found the staff professional and friendly enough I got there right at opening. The line moved quickly and I was glad because it was a cold day in March! I attribute a lot of that to the uniformed guard keeping things moving He was very efficient and even answered a few questions Getting the form and filling it out was ok The pen they gave me was broken ! No biggie The guy who processed me was very efficient and thorough One problem: He gave me misinformation I had to travel suddenly and my ID was getting ready to expire so I wanted to rush the process of getting a new card Instead I was issued a photo copy of my new photo, the information and a scan bar. My new card was going to be mailed I was assured that TSA would accept it They don't On first pass they did accept my now void plastic ID card--void because they punched the words void in the plastic but the TSA guy didn't notice 2nd pass they did notice and it took a combo of IDs and a little pleading with the TSA Word to the wise: TSA will accept an expired ID within a year They will not accept the photocopy of a future ID if you are traveling wait until you have 10 free days in a row to renew Repeat: No matter how nicely the DMV tells you that they've been issuing these temporary paper IDs (I was told 2 years) TSA Will...
