This beautiful landmark memorializes the efforts of the famed doughboys of WW1 fame as well as their commander, Black Jack Pershing. This site shows the major fronts fought by the US, a huge statue of Pershing, a waterfall with a famous poem, and an absolutely stunning bronze relief called “A Soldier’s Journey” that shows multiple views of a soldier’s experience from an emotional leaving home to the tough fighting, being wounded and recovery, through returning home - it is stunning. Each and every day at 5 PM a musician and (ex)serviceman comes out and plays Taps complete with greatcoat and WW1 helmet in front of the US flag. Amazing. This is one of the fantastic landmarks of the city - definitely go and see this one,...

This is a great little park to take a rest while doing your tour of DC’s monuments or a great destination for Washingtonians to spend sometime in our city. Located at the west end of Pennsylvania Ave (before it continues on the other side of the White House, you have a view of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Wilson Building (DC’s gorgeous seat of government), Freedom Plaza (check out the map of downtown DC that makes up the plaza floor), the Treasury building, the Willard Intercontinental, and the relatively new World War I memorial in the park itself. Well...

If you have just a moment while in the city, this is a much needed stop. I was so moved tears filled my eyes when discovering this place. I came across the poem on the wall first. It hit me so hard I had to sit and take a few moments of silence. Next I wandered to the other side of the wall. The mural is such a haunting piece of art that is so realistic. It's almost too much to take in, but then you do and this overwhelming bit of sadness hits. Never forget. Their lives and the freedoms they fought for should not be so...

Honestly, we stumbled, almost literally, upon the Pershing statue and remarkably detailed and compelling sculpture -mural depicting heartwarming as well as harrowing events evocative of a 'common' U.S. soldier's experience during World War I. It was dusk , which only enhanced the intimacy of the moment with the lonesome artwork. I think it's fitting that this memorial is just off the beaten path as World War I slips further back in the mind of the collective national memory.
