The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, set in the heart of Theodore Roosevelt Island, beautifully captures the spirit and legacy of one of our nation’s most passionate conservationists. The natural setting adds a sense of reverence and intention, making it feel like a fitting tribute to a president who championed the great outdoors.
At the center stands a striking, powerful statue of Teddy Roosevelt, whose commanding presence is made all the more dramatic by the lush forest backdrop. Surrounding him are four large monoliths etched with quotes—brief but meaningful insights into his values and vision, well worth a few moments to read and reflect on.
Unfortunately, during our visit, the reflection pools and fountains were dry, which diminished the otherwise serene and inspiring atmosphere.
The memorial is easy to access via the footbridge from the parking lot on the Virginia side of the Potomac, and the walk through the island enhances the experience.
One notable drawback is the frequent airplane noise from nearby Reagan Airport, as the island lies directly under the landing path. The regular roar of jets overhead interrupts the peace and feels somewhat at odds with the contemplative nature of the space.

Unfortunately, lots of airplane and car noise and usually quite busy. The boardwalk around the island is in rough shape with lots of severely bowed planks and even collapsing in some places. The boardwalk is wide enough for two people to pass each other but that’s it.

Trails are nice, but they are just that....trails, so if you use a wheelchair, it is accessible, but it'll be extremely difficult without a motorized wheelchair or off-road tires....
