Dost thou darest 'xcrete upon my face?
I screamed to the heavens, trembling against the weight of nature's fury.
For I have naught to make peace within thy furor, only mine own mind!
Two days later, it had still not rained, so I was forced to dock my paddle boat on this abandoned isle and refill my Gatorade bottle in its swampy rushes.
Imagine my surprise to find monuments of a bemustachio'ed man scattered about the place, couples in elegant hiking shorts pausing to look up with enamored eyes. My my, I thought to myself, this land hath been settled by heathens who worship the very hair I shave from my visage, who struggle so to erect skyscraping towers that they have been forced to stand their paltry efforts sideways and walk all over them. I nearly lost my paddles for the staunch pity that I let drip from my eyeballs, the sorrow I could only express with a vast shaking of the head, back and forth, back and forth -
For shame!
But they have no shame here, Constable, and as I rowed away I reminded myself of your evergreen wisdom, trapped 'neath the rushes of a bitter pavement that loops, loops, loops, only to never find its way home:
My love, would that I might know your face in Any age, under any tyrant, through Any emblem of a rising sun that Knows its fate, that fights, that begs itself to Let go! But it will not, and I cannot, And were there ever an age where I could Find you I would not. I would keep you wild And reckless. I would paint your gaze a flood And weep the world to rain and dare some god Paint the dawn as a sea...

Read moreRoosevelt island is amazing. You access it from the mt Vernon trail in VA by crossing a pedestrian bridge. There is a large parking lot off the gw parkway to access the bridge - or you can bike/walk/run there. There are various trails around the perimeter of the island, just a bit over a mile around. The north side of the island has a half-mile long boardwalk. There are various entry points to the center attraction, which is a very large statue of Theodore Roosevelt and several large pools that used to have water in them, but haven't for years. Honestly, the trails around the perimeter are the best part of the island. There are bathrooms off the main trail to the right after you get off the bridge.
During the summer, you can see turtles sunbathing on logs under the area where the bridge meets the island. There are geckos all along the island. You can see ducks and herons at some of the offshoots of the boardwalk. During the fall, you can sometimes see deer on the south side of the island.
You can also often watch the rowing teams from many points...
