Dost thou darest 'xcrete upon my face?

I screamed to the heavens, trembling against the weight of nature's fury.

For I have naught to make peace within thy furor, only mine own mind!

Two days later, it had still not rained, so I was forced to dock my paddle boat on this abandoned isle and refill my Gatorade bottle in its swampy rushes.

Imagine my surprise to find monuments of a bemustachio'ed man scattered about the place, couples in elegant hiking shorts pausing to look up with enamored eyes. My my, I thought to myself, this land hath been settled by heathens who worship the very hair I shave from my visage, who struggle so to erect skyscraping towers that they have been forced to stand their paltry efforts sideways and walk all over them. I nearly lost my paddles for the staunch pity that I let drip from my eyeballs, the sorrow I could only express with a vast shaking of the head, back and forth, back and forth -

For shame!

But they have no shame here, Constable, and as I rowed away I reminded myself of your evergreen wisdom, trapped 'neath the rushes of a bitter pavement that loops, loops, loops, only to never find its way home:

My love, would that I might know your face in Any age, under any tyrant, through Any emblem of a rising sun that Knows its fate, that fights, that begs itself to Let go! But it will not, and I cannot, And were there ever an age where I could Find you I would not. I would keep you wild And reckless. I would paint your gaze a flood And weep the world to rain and dare some god Paint the dawn as a sea...

Roosevelt Island Park in Washington, D.C. is a hidden gem deserving of a five-star review. Nestled in the Potomac River, this tranquil oasis offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, providing visitors with a serene natural retreat.

The park boasts well-maintained trails that wind through diverse landscapes, including lush woodlands, peaceful wetlands, and open fields. The main trail, which circles the island, offers stunning views of the river and the city skyline, making it a picturesque spot for a leisurely hike or a brisk walk.

One of the park's highlights is the impressive memorial to President Theodore Roosevelt, featuring large granite tablets inscribed with his inspiring quotes. This monument is both educational and inspirational, adding a unique historical element to the natural beauty of the island.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the abundance of birds, turtles, and other animals that inhabit the park, making it a great spot for birdwatching and nature photography. The well-preserved natural habitat provides a peaceful environment for reflection and relaxation.

Roosevelt island is amazing. You access it from the mt Vernon trail in VA by crossing a pedestrian bridge. There is a large parking lot off the gw parkway to access the bridge - or you can bike/walk/run there. There are various trails around the perimeter of the island, just a bit over a mile around. The north side of the island has a half-mile long boardwalk. There are various entry points to the center attraction, which is a very large statue of Theodore Roosevelt and several large pools that used to have water in them, but haven't for years. Honestly, the trails around the perimeter are the best part of the island. There are bathrooms off the main trail to the right after you get off the bridge.

During the summer, you can see turtles sunbathing on logs under the area where the bridge meets the island. There are geckos all along the island. You can see ducks and herons at some of the offshoots of the boardwalk. During the fall, you can sometimes see deer on the south side of the island.

You can also often watch the rowing teams from many points...

Parking is free. Restroom is available at the porta potty at the start of the pedestrian bridge. The park has 3 looping trails of different lengths that interconnect with each other so that you can walk/run/bike on a different route on each loop. At the center is the dystopian looking plaza which has the Theodore Roosevelt’s statue surrounded by 2 water fountains (not working at time of visit in July) and a bridge over stagnant water area. There are concrete benches here where you can rest in the shade during mornings/evenings. You will hear planes flyby frequently as the island is in the path of incoming/outgoing planes from the Ronald Reagan airport. There are 2 beach areas where dogs can probably take a quick dip in summer. The only gripe about this park is that the trails aren’t marked. For a first-time visitor, I tried to take the outer-most Swamp trail loop but got lost after taking few side trails into the forest. The 3 main trails are wide and mostly have gravel in them in some areas- follow those trails.

Monument: This place is a huge disappointment. The fountains aren’t running and have standing water, trash, and debris in them. The “moat” has no water and has piles of trash, and it just isn’t kept up. If you’re planning on going here as part of your D.C. trip, skip it. The big stones also need to be professionally cleaned because they are hard to read. Just don’t go here. I’m very thankful I didn’t have to pay for parking to see this. You also don’t get a National Parks Stamp for your passport because there isn’t a single staff in sight. Trails: On the other hand, the trails are pretty nice. They are well shaded and have occasional bathrooms, but the water fountains aren’t working… :/ The restrooms aren’t super clean and are super small (anyone over 150 lbs would have trouble using them). The only good thing about the restrooms is the soap and flushing toilets.
