I'm a plant person. I have many indoor plants (too numerous to count), an ever expanding vegetable garden in the backyard and an ever expanding flower garden in the front yard. So, if you're a plant person like me, you can imagine how I'd feel being in a place like the US Botanic garden. I love it so much, I want to live there! It was pure luck and coincidence that my planty friends and I planned a trip to the US Botanic Garden during the Corpse Flower bloom. We expected large crowds in the garden, especially surrounding the Corpse flower, as it was on the news, but, it wasn't so bad at all! There were many visitors, but not crowded that it takes away the fun of each exhibit. We all met outside the entrance of the garden; there were many police officers on their bikes. This was back in early August 2025 before the federalization of DC police. So, safety was not even a concern for me. Entering the Botanic garden, the atrium was already breathtaking! The first exhibit we visited in the atrium was the cocao tree, where a volunteer showed us how chocolate is made. Aside from the visual appeal of the tree, we experienced the texture of the pod and smelled the cocao after each processing step in the making of chocolate. That was very cool! We visited the Corpse flower in full bloom, however, I was disappointed that we had missed the smelly period (the smell is only within the first 24 hours of blooming). There were many visitors, but we were still able to fit in an obligatory selfie of all of us in front of the flower. The details that goes into the presentation of each plant specie is outstanding. Most plants are labeled and staged as it would appear in its natural habitat. There were so much to take in, a day trip isn't enough to appreciate all of the plants! The highlight was the orchid exhibit. We spent extra time in there. I recommend experiencing as many orchids with as many of your senses as possible! Aside from just looking at their beautiful flowers, smell them! Gently touch them! That's the beauty of such a place as the Botanic garden! When we were close to leaving the garden, we met a volunteer who pointed us up visit the upper canopy of the garden, and we were so grateful she did! We almost left without going up to the upper level of the garden! She was so friendly and informative, my friend and I were inspired to become volunteers, too! My only complaint and feedback for the US Botanic Garden is this: as a fan of Hoyas, there aren't enough hoyas displayed. My friends and I looked, and I found one, a Hoya Imbricata, inconspicuously hanging from a tree branch. It's possible we might have missed them, so I'll just have to return and comb through every nook...
