I'm a plant person. I have many indoor plants (too numerous to count), an ever expanding vegetable garden in the backyard and an ever expanding flower garden in the front yard. So, if you're a plant person like me, you can imagine how I'd feel being in a place like the US Botanic garden. I love it so much, I want to live there! It was pure luck and coincidence that my planty friends and I planned a trip to the US Botanic Garden during the Corpse Flower bloom. We expected large crowds in the garden, especially surrounding the Corpse flower, as it was on the news, but, it wasn't so bad at all! There were many visitors, but not crowded that it takes away the fun of each exhibit. We all met outside the entrance of the garden; there were many police officers on their bikes. This was back in early August 2025 before the federalization of DC police. So, safety was not even a concern for me. Entering the Botanic garden, the atrium was already breathtaking! The first exhibit we visited in the atrium was the cocao tree, where a volunteer showed us how chocolate is made. Aside from the visual appeal of the tree, we experienced the texture of the pod and smelled the cocao after each processing step in the making of chocolate. That was very cool! We visited the Corpse flower in full bloom, however, I was disappointed that we had missed the smelly period (the smell is only within the first 24 hours of blooming). There were many visitors, but we were still able to fit in an obligatory selfie of all of us in front of the flower. The details that goes into the presentation of each plant specie is outstanding. Most plants are labeled and staged as it would appear in its natural habitat. There were so much to take in, a day trip isn't enough to appreciate all of the plants! The highlight was the orchid exhibit. We spent extra time in there. I recommend experiencing as many orchids with as many of your senses as possible! Aside from just looking at their beautiful flowers, smell them! Gently touch them! That's the beauty of such a place as the Botanic garden! When we were close to leaving the garden, we met a volunteer who pointed us up visit the upper canopy of the garden, and we were so grateful she did! We almost left without going up to the upper level of the garden! She was so friendly and informative, my friend and I were inspired to become volunteers, too! My only complaint and feedback for the US Botanic Garden is this: as a fan of Hoyas, there aren't enough hoyas displayed. My friends and I looked, and I found one, a Hoya Imbricata, inconspicuously hanging from a tree branch. It's possible we might have missed them, so I'll just have to return and comb through every nook...

A Breath of Fresh Air in the Heart of DC!

Visiting the United States Botanic Garden is like stepping into a peaceful haven of beauty and greenery right in the bustling heart of Washington, D.C. From the moment you walk through the grand entrance, you'll be whisked away into a world brimming with vibrant colors, alluring fragrances, and the gentle rustle of leaves – it’s a sensory feast!

The diverse collection of plants is nothing short of breathtaking. You’ll encounter everything from towering palms that make you feel tiny, to exquisite orchids in hues that seem to defy nature. Each display feels thoughtfully curated; you can tell that a tremendous amount of love and care goes into maintaining these living treasures.

One of the highlights for me was the Tropical Garden. It’s like stepping into a lush rainforest, complete with cascading waterfalls and vibrant, exotic plants. The subtropical realm there made me forget, even just for a moment, that I was just a stone’s throw away from the wide sidewalks of Capitol Hill.

The conservatory is a beautifully orchestrated blend of art and nature, and the Flowering Garden outside is equally delightful, showcasing breathtaking seasonal blooms. Each visit guarantees something new to marvel at, depending on the time of year.

Don’t forget to take a stroll through the medicinal plant garden – what an eye-opening experience! It’s fascinating to learn about all the plants that have healing properties and their historical significance. For kids and curious adults alike, it's educational without feeling like a textbook; it's fun and interactive – proof that botany can appeal to all ages!

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share their insights and passion for the garden. Speaking of friendly, the atmosphere felt open and inviting—people of all ages, from families to solo explorers, coexisting in this beautiful retreat.

All in all, the United States Botanic Garden is a gem well worth the visit – whether you just have an hour to spare or a leisurely afternoon to soak everything in. It's an experience that nourishes the soul and invigorates the mind. So grab a book, your phone for some beautiful photographs, or just your thoughts, and relish the beauty of this unique sanctuary. I can’t wait...
