“In 1756, during the French and Indian War, Col. George Washington proposed, designed, and supervised construction of the largest and most formidable fort on Virginia's colonial frontier. Equipped with 24 pieces of artillery, the fort served as Col. Washington's command center for the Virginia Regiment and a chain of defenses that extended from the Potomac River to the North Carolina border. Situated on the high ground north of town, the fort overlooked and protected the developing community. Directly behind this marker is the fort's surviving well dug through 103 feet of solid limestone.” -Virginia Historical Marker

We stopped by while on our NJ Revolutionary adventures. It was a quick stop. It is the site of George Washington’s regimental headquarters during the French and Indian War. One can take a self guided tour, or from the foundation during May to October.

This is THE place to cool off. We went there and noticed a commotion about a half-block away. People were lined up watching some old guy who actually tried to eat an ice cream cone with a mask on.

It was a hot day and he was dripping the sticky glop all over himself and others. It looked like he was trying to smell people's hair when they would try to take a selfie with him.

Some guys with dark glasses tried to talk him into going with them. He kept saying, "C'mon, man!"

It was really odd so we just left. People were saying the guy with the ice cream was connected to George Washington.

Very Confusing.

We went back in April but it snowed. We had a brief snowball fight and some Karen with a mask raised hell about it so we flipped her off and peeled...

Visit to see George Washington’s fort to defend the first frontier of America. Great guide named David. Have to make arrangements for a private tour but can follow along with cell phone tour. Little museum with artifacts, books and maps open by appointment. The original hand dug well remains which is the focal point of visible history with an outline of...
