This hotel is lovely, and there are also several areas that need improvement.
Décor: The hall rugs and some furnishings seem old, rather than historic-looking, and could use some freshening-up with period-appropriate reproductions.
Handicap Access: This hotel is NOT that handicap friendly, & also is a bit awkward for anyone who is heavy-set, because portions of the layout of the rooms are squished and illogical. We could not get to our bed from one side because of the fireplace mantle being way too close to the bedpost, and there was absolutely no wiggle room to adjust that. The night stand on the side we could reach is right up on the door, and if you are entering the room you could easily knock into it or knock things over. There is one handicap parking spot for the entire Hotel (AYFKM???), and it is not even that close to the building. The front of the building has a place to pull up and unload, but there is no ramp there to load your luggage or enter there in a wheelchair, so you have to do it from the back which is quite a schlep from the parking lot if you are mobility-impaired. Historical building or not, there are some ADA failures going on.
Room Overview: The rooms are well apportioned, size aside. We had a lovely gas fireplace (that took a minute to get going, but finally did) and is nice and toasty. There's plenty of electrical outlets for personal electronics, although a few of the outlets are in awkward places to reach, and a couple were even pulling out of the wall. We had a fridge, microwave, and computer desk. (I bring these things up because of the historical nature of the building; similar buildings do not always have expected modern amenities that we would nowadays take for granted.)
Bathroom: We are very impressed with the size of and the amenities in the bathrooms. There is a separate Jacuzzi bathtub, and a huge glass shower, as well as a double sink, a towel rack (although it doesn't seem to be heated), and a marble floor throughout. As someone else mentioned, for safety reasons, this Jacuzzi bathtub is wonderful but there should be handrails to get in and out whether you are handicapped or not. It's very slippery and awkward to enter and exit safely.
Website: The hotel website is not all that mobile app friendly, and some of the menu navigation is difficult.
Bathroom Redux: The light switch for the bathroom is not illuminated in the dark and it is all the way around behind one of the double doors. It really should be on the outside of the bathroom, so you can turn on the light as you go in, not trip trying to find it in the middle of the night.
Bed: We had a king size bed in the junior suite and it was actually too tall for a short person to be able to get in without a step stool. The front desk was kind enough to send us something up for the weekend, but I think it would make the room look nice and also be more pragmatic to have those bedroom step stools be standard in any rooms with these king size beds.
Bathroom: The entire bathroom area, and most especially the toilet, which is interestingly separated from everything else by its own closet (very European,) is absolutely, unbearably freezing, and there seems to be no vents in there to heat it up. Leaving the double doors open so that the rest of the room can heat it, and even while using the fireplace, none of that does any good. And the floors are marble, so going in, in the dark, in the middle of the night, is a bracing adventure.
Vending: The vending machines don't have many choices, and are not on every floor as they should be. Pack your own snacks from home.
Gift Shop & Tea: We did find something of a gift shop that is centered around Tea items that are themed to George Washington (specialized to the motif of the hotel.)
In general, the hotel is lovely, for the most part, and the historical vibe is kind of fun, but if you're going to charge $300 a night for all the way out in Winchester, there's a lot of improvement that...
Read moreFirst off, this is an old hotel "managed by Wyndham Grand", it's not actually a Wyndham Grand hotel. Being Wyndham Rewards GOLD members, we specifically chose this hotel for our anniversary trip because of the "Wyndham Grand" moniker and were left disappointed.
The lobby and bar are nicely appointed and the staff in each are pleasant and accommodating, although the front desk clerks constantly hid in the back office with the door closed. Complimentary coffee and tea is offered in the lobby, but only on weekends. The boutique jewelry shop is only open on weekends and by appointment. Only one of the two elevators were working when we arrived, but the second one was repaired the next day. We tried avoiding the second elevator because we would cringe every time it came to a stop. The whole elevator would vibrate as the brakes were applied and made the most god-awful, unsettling noise. The outdoor area off the bar is really just where people go to smoke. Behind the hotel is the tiny surface parking lot that fills up quick. We realized there's an unused valet area on the first floor of the parking garage with extra handicap spaces. Just immediately turn left after entering the garage. Contrary to their list of amenities, there was no valet, porter, concierge or express check out available at the hotel during our stay.
Downstairs you'll find the spa, pool and fitness center which are all shoe-horned into a tight space in the basement adjacent to the hotel's restaurant. The spa staff was very pleasant and informative, but it was awkward walking through the spa to get to the very small pool and gym. The pool theme is very Greco-Roman, but it's a fraction of the size it appears to be in the pictures. It is an unheated saltwater pool that has warmer water injected every 20 minutes or so. The space itself is unheated and the hot tub "has been broken for some time" and "we've been waiting on parts for months". Even in the middle of August, it was chilly in the space and we sat on the patio furniture for a few minutes wrapped in towels trying to get warm after exiting the pool. The restaurant looked quaint in pictures, but is really nothing special in person. We had the breakfast there and, honestly, we regretted doing so. I think we would've done better at Dunkin' for less money. However, our waitress was very pleasant, attentive and informative about nearby restaurants.
The room was decent though small. The safe was unusable as someone locked it and left it open so I couldn't reprogram it with my own combination. There is no threshold under the door so if you want to maintain a constant temp in there overnight and get some sleep, be sure to stuff some extra bath towels in that gap! I literally could feel warm air waft in from under the door as I was lying in bed. There are windows that are sealed from the inside and our room overlooked the empty lot and abandoned buildings across the street. The beds, pillows and linens were recently freshened and comfortable. There are the usual amenities, but the small fridge is LOUD when you turn it on. The bathroom was a decent size but we felt like we were on a pedestal with the taller toilet. The roll up shade was broken so it was always very dark in the bathroom even with the built-in nightlight. Be careful in the shower! They provide a bath mat for inside the tub which doesn't actually stay in place. My wife nearly fell down because the mat unexpectedly slid towards the drain making her lose balance. Thankfully she was able to catch herself causing only some bruising and muscle soreness. It's just as dangerous without the mat. There are no anti-slip surfaces in the tub itself and with just a little soapy water you can find yourself on a skating rink! Our room was not made or even visited the whole week. The housekeepers seemed more concerned with empty rooms.
Honestly, we were disappointed with our stay and won't be coming back to this hotel again. We pay extra for Wyndham Grand quality and expect...
Read moreMy family and I had a less than stellar experience here, and most of it was regarding the checking in/out portion of the hotel.
Firstly, I thought the hotel itself was fine. Of course it’s an older building so one can appreciate its charm, but there is of course wear and tear. I found this to be of little importance but in case anyone is interested in that! We attended a wedding and it was the reason we were there in the first place. I called in advance to make reservations for several family members and that process went pretty smoothly.
However, from there it was pretty bad.
The day after the wedding, when we were all checking out, everyone’s receipt (and I mean almost everyone who had attended the wedding) had some kind of error. Multiple people were charged for parking, which doesn’t make sense as the first thing they ask when you check in is if you have a vehicle. If our initial paperwork states we do not have a vehicle in the parking lot, why is there a parking fee automatically included? Why ask? It was a lot of refunding that morning after that could have been avoided.
Next, we had special rates for the wedding - 109 for the night before, and then 159 for the night of the wedding. Multiple people were charged a full 159 for BOTH NIGHTS and it was only after people reviewed their receipts that changes were made. There was also a mixup with the rooms, some people had one bed after requesting two, others had two when they only needed one. It was a lot and the mistakes were almost on everyone’s receipt.
My family in particular stayed only one night, the night of the wedding, so imagine our surprise when we were charged for two nights! We had to go back and have that changed. It was stressful but we thought once we left the hotel it would be okay.
Wrong. Almost a month after the wedding, we’ve recently received our credit card statement to find out that we were charged for a FOURTH mystery room. We only had booked three. After several calls to family members, it was confirmed that none of us had stayed in that room. Whose room were they charging us for? Upon calling the hotel to review this, they could only offer us a partial refund, as opposed to removing the charge altogether. So they get to keep part of our funds for a service we never benefited from.
All in all it was a stressful and disappointing experience, and I hope that they are able to improve. I would not recommend this hotel on this basis and felt that some of the practices were either dishonest or a...
