The best place to park is the visitor center nearest to Native Brewery. Have lunch there before or after your hike. Yum! The walk is an out & back that leads you by the river to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. The trail will be 90% in the shade with a cool breeze coming from the river even in July during the middle of the day. You will see tubers going down the river while you walk. You will meet friendly people along the way. If you're lucky you might even see an elk bedded down in the woods closer to the visitor center. Great walk! It's about 3 miles...
Read moreVery short trail, didn’t actually finish it but loved the experience. Wanted to see some elk, so got there about 7:30 am. Parking lot was still pretty empty and we saw plenty of elk in the pasture.
Walked down the trail, pretty easy, flat, runs by the river. About half mile in trail was blocked by a group of female elk and their young ones.
