Very short trail, didn’t actually finish it but loved the experience. Wanted to see some elk, so got there about 7:30 am. Parking lot was still pretty empty and we saw plenty of elk in the pasture. Walked down the trail, pretty easy, flat, runs by the river. About half mile in trail was blocked by a group of female elk and their young ones. Got to watch them for a while until the bull elk came in and started driving them back. Then got to see them cross back over the river back into the forest. Was an amazing experience.

While it's the only Smokey Mountain trail in NC that allows dogs it's mostly will suited for it. It's wide and typically has room to maneuver dogs past each other. A few blind curves, but manageable. However, there are no trash bins at the trail head by highway 441 or along the trail. Only bin is by the visitor center area. Be ready to carry your doggos waste for a bit. Someone left fill waste bags in the brochure box at the trail head!

We were on a trip through the mountains and decided to stop at the park and stretch our legs. Glad we did. Spent maybe an hour or two walking trails and viewing the old farm place. Very interesting and well worth the stop. In fact, it was worth the stop just to stop, sit in the shade by that clear flowing stream listening and watching the river run for a little while.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Oconaluftee River Trail Trailhead is an absolute gem for anyone seeking a peaceful, scenic, and easy hiking experience in the Great Smoky Mountains. This trail is perfect for all ages and skill levels, offering a gentle path alongside the serene Oconaluftee River that is simply breathtaking. The sound of the flowing river, combined with the lush greenery and vibrant wildlife, makes for an incredibly relaxing and immersive nature experience.

The trail is well-maintained, making it ideal for families, casual hikers, and even those looking for a quiet walk. It’s dog-friendly too, which was a huge plus for us! Along the way, you’ll find interpretive signs that provide interesting insights into the local flora, fauna, and history of the area, adding an educational element to your hike.

What really sets this trail apart is its proximity to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and the Mountain Farm Museum, both of which are worth visiting before or after your hike. The trail is easily accessible, and the natural beauty of the river and surrounding forest makes every step enjoyable.

Whether you're looking for a relaxing nature walk, a place to bring the family, or a chance to soak in the beauty of the Smokies, the Oconaluftee River Trail is a must-do. Highly recommended for anyone...

If you are looking for an easy walk, with impeccable views, shade, and friendly people you should try the Oconaluftee River Trail in Cherokee, NC. The best place to park is the visitor center nearest to Native Brewery. Have lunch there before or after your hike. Yum! The walk is an out & back that leads you by the river to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. The trail will be 90% in the shade with a cool breeze coming from the river even in July during the middle of the day. You will see tubers going down the river while you walk. You will meet friendly people along the way. If you're lucky you might even see an elk bedded down in the woods closer to the visitor center. Great walk! It's about 3 miles...
