Outer City Wall — Attraction in Khiva

In 1842 Allah Kuli Khan ordered his 200.000 subjects to build a wall around the Dishan-Kala to defend it against it's main enemies: Turkmen tribes and the emir of Bukhara. Each inhabitant of Khiva worked 12 days a years (for free!), and after only 3 years a 6.0 km long, 8 m tall and 6 m thick adobe brick wall with ten gates was erected. Today, only 1.8 km of it remains, sometimes completely wedged between houses, and three gates remain. Efforts are being made to renovate as many parts as possible.
