Juma MosqueOf all Khiva mosques the Friday-prayer Juma Mosque located in the center of Ichan-Kala takes the most prominent place. Its main distinctive feature is its architectural design, which is uncharacteristic of mosques. Despite the tradition Juma Mosque has no arched entrances, portals or even domes. It is just a one-storey structure with strong walls and three doors. Such inconsistency was due to the fact that the mosque was constructed - thanks to the khan’s nobleman Abdurahman Mihtar’s benefaction in the late 18th с - on the site of an older mosque dating back to the 10th c, and so they decided to build the new mosque to be just the same as the previous one had been. The central entrance to the mosque faces the only Khiva straight street running from Kunya Ark Fortress. It is a wooden door richly decorated with beautiful carvings. The door is over seven centuries old. Yet it is the prayer hall of Juma Mosque that is so attractive. The roof of the hall lies on over 200 wooden pillars. Their height varies from 4 to 5 meters. This hall is like a museum of Khiva wood carving styles of different times - that is what the pillars show us. A few of the pillars date back to the 10th с and are extremely interesting. Another 20 or so date back to the 11th - 14th с, as the styles of their carving patterns prove. The pillars of the 16th с bear flat relief patterns that are obviously imitations of older techniques.

Juma Mosque – A Forest of Pillars in the Heart of Khiva. Tucked deep within the walls of Ichan Kala, the Juma Mosque (Friday Mosque) is one of Khiva’s most atmospheric and unique monuments. Originally founded in the 10th century and rebuilt in its current form in 1788–89, it stands out for its hypostyle hall, supported by 213 wooden columns—a layout rarely seen in Central Asian architecture. Each column has its own character, many salvaged from earlier structures, with some dating back as far as the 10th or 11th century. Intricate carvings, geometric patterns, and Arabic inscriptions reveal a rich mix of eras and artistic traditions. The open-plan interior allows light to filter in from ceiling openings, creating an otherworldly, almost mystical atmosphere. Unlike typical mosques with domes and minarets, Juma Mosque prioritizes simplicity and serenity. It served as the main place of Friday prayer for the people of Khiva and continues to awe visitors with its timeless spiritual aura. Today, the Juma Mosque is a must-visit for those who want to experience the spiritual and artistic heritage of Khiva. Visitors often say it’s not just a building, but an atmosphere — quiet, ancient, and profoundly moving. Just outside stands the Juma Minaret, also known as the Jummi Minaret.

Juma masjid o‘rta asrlarda shaharning ko‘zga ko‘ringan binolaridan biri edi. O‘ziga xos qurilishi va hajmi bilan ajralib turgan. Bu yodgorlik Xorazmning qadimgi masjidlarni eslatadi. Ancha katta 55x46 metrli maydonni egallab, ko‘p ustunli qilib qurilgan. Bu bino «Ichon-Qal’a»ning sharqiy va g‘arbiy darvozalarini o‘ragan katta ko‘cha yoqasida joylashgan. X asrda Xorazmga kelgan arab sayyohi al-Maqsidiy Xivaning Juma masjidini birinchi marta tilga oldi. Biroq ko‘pdan beri yashab kelayotgan Xivaliklarning aytishlariga qaraganda, Ko‘hna masjid buzilib ketgan va uning o‘rniga 1788 yili xuddi o‘sha reja asosida ancha kengaytirib hozirgi masjid bino qilingan. Masjid binosining tashqi ko‘rinishi juda sodda, balandligi 4,5 metr, minoraning balandligi esa 42 metrga teng. Juda masjid bir qavatli tekis tomli imorat bo‘lib, 213 ta ustuni bor. Masjidning mehrobi xonaning janubiy devorida joylashgan. Mehrob, odatdagidek, alohida ko‘rinib turishi uchun uning yonlariga baland tokchalari ishlangan bo‘lib, shifti esa balandroq qilib qurilgan. Mehrobning ikki yonidagi devorlariga o‘rnatilgan marmar toshlarga o‘ymakor xatlar bitilgan, xatlarning biri hijriy sana 1203 (1788-89) masjid mulki va mablag‘ hadya etilishi munosabati bilan tuzilgan vaqfnoma, ikkinchisi esa 1666 yilda yozilgan masjid tarixiga oid ma’lumotdir. Aholi orasida masjid XVIII asrning oxirlarida ta’mir qilingan, degan fikr mavjud. Janubiy fasadiga o‘ymakor eshikka bitilgan xatda ham shu haqida aytilgan. Unda 1788-89 yillarda Abdurahmon Mextar ismli shaxs boshchiligida masjid ta’mirlandi deyilgan. Masjidda qadimgi naqshinkor ustunlardan 15 tasi saqlanib kolgan, 8 ta ustun Toshkentda O‘zbekiston xalqlari tarixi muzeyida saqlanmoqda. Professor Ya.G‘ulomov fikricha, bu ustunlarning ba’zilari butun O‘zbekistonda yog‘ochga o‘yma naqsh solish san’atining eng qadimgi yodgorliklardir. Bu nodir yodgorlikni 1979 yili arxitektor Sonechkin loyihasi asosida ta’mirlash boshlanadi. Juma masjidning 108 ta ustuni 1983 yili aholidan sotib olingan. XVIII-XX asr boshlariga oid naqshindor ustunlar bilan almashtirilgan. 1996-1997 yillarda Juma masjidi ta’mirlandi va ko‘pchilik ustunlar almashtirildi.

Juma masjid, Xiva juma masjidi — Xorazm viloyatining Xiva shahridagi meʼmoriy yodgorlik Masjidning tarixi X asr—XVIII asrlarga borib taqaladi. Juma masjidi Ichan qalʼaning markaziy qismidagi Ota darvoza va Polvon darvozalarni birlashtiruvchi koʻchada joylashgan. Aniq manzili esa bugungi kunda „Ichan qalʼa“ mahallasi, Pahlavon Mahmud koʻchasi, 19-uyda joylashgan.

Meʼmoriy yodgorlik Oʻzbekiston Respublikasi Vazirlar Mahkamasining qarori bilan 2019-yil 4-oktyabrda Moddiy madaniy merosning koʻchmas mulk obyektlari milliy roʻyxatiga kiritilgan va davlat muhofazasiga olingan. Hozirda „Ichan qalʼa“ davlat muzey-qoʻriqxonasi operativ boshqaruv huquqi asosida davlat mulkiga tegishli[1]. Juma masjid haqidagi ilk maʼlumot X asrda Xorazmga kelgan arab sayyohlari al-Muqaddasiy (Maqdisiy) va al-Istaxriy yozmalarida uchraydi. Manbalarga koʻra, Juma masjidning dastlabki binosi buzilib ketgan va oʻrniga Abdurahmon Mehtar buyrugʻiga binoan 1788-yilda xuddi shu usulda kattaroq yangi masjid qurilgan. Masjid oʻziga xos tarhi va hajmi bilan ajralib turgan. Bir qavatli boʻlib, atrofi gʻishtin devor bilan oʻralgan. Uning boshqa masjidlardan farqi qadimiy arab meʼmorligiga xos uslubda (yopiq, koʻp ustunli hamda hovlisiz qilib) qurilganligidadir. Unda ayvonlar bilan oʻralgan hovli ham, ulkan peshtoq ham, gumbazli xonalar ham yoʻq. Xonaqoh ichi shipdagi ikki tuynuk orqali yoritiladi. Tomi yassi, toʻsinli, shipini 212 ta ustun koʻtarib turadi. Bu ustunlarning eng qadimiysi Xorazmning oʻrta asrdagi poytaxti Kyat shahridan olingan boʻlishi mumkin. Ustunlar 17 qatorli, oraligʻi 3,15×3,15 m qilib ishlangan. Mehrobi janubiy devor markazida joylashgan. Tashqi devorlari oddiy bezaksiz. Bosh tarzidagi eshik yogʻoch oʻymakorligida ishlangan noyob namuna hisoblanadi. Ichki bezaklari sodda ganch suvoq qilingan. Mehrob ravogʻida iroqi muqarnas va koʻk rangli boʻyama naqsh (XVIII asrga oid) saqlangan. Ustunlar masjid tuzilishining asosini tashkil etish bilan birga uning badiiy bezagi hamdir. Ular oʻziga xos mutanosiblik va koʻrinishga ega. 212 ta ustundan X—XIV asrlarga oid 25 ta ustun eng qadimiysi boʻlib, tuzilishida bir qancha uslub namunalari bor. X—XI asrlarga oid 4 ta ustun chuqur boʻrtma naqshli, kufiy xati islimiy naqsh bilan uygʻunlashgan. Unda faqih Abul Fadal Muhammad Laysi farmoni bilan qurilgani yozilgan. XI—XII asrlarga oid 17 ustun nisbatan sayoz oʻyilgan, undagi handasiy naqshlar oraligʻi uslublashtirilgan, nabotiy shakllar bilan toʻldirilgan, yozuvlari kufiy xatida bitilgan (yaxshi saqlanmagan) XV asrga oid 3 ta ustun islimiy, girih naqshlar va nasx xatida hoshiya qilib terilgan. Bu uslubdagi oʻymakorlik bezaklari mehrob yaqinidagi yogʻoch taxtachalarda va eshik tabaqalarida uchraydi. Nasx yozuvlar bitilgan ustunlar Bog‘bonli masjid ustunlari bilan bir xil. Ustunlarning birida milodiy 1510-yil yozuvi saqlangan. Ular mehrob yaqinidagi marmar taxtalar bilan bir vaqtda oʻrnatilgan boʻlishi mumkin. Kichik marmar taxtada 1666-yil, ikkinchi marmar taxta yozuvidagi vaqfnomada vazir Abdurahmon amri bilan Quyuqtom va Bekobod qishloqlarida masjidga vaqf yerlari ajratilganligi va daromadni xayr-ehsonga hamda masjid zaruriyatiga sarf qilish lozimligi yozilgan (1788—1789-yillar). Qolgan ustunlar Xorazmdagi turli binolardan yigʻib keltirilgan. Uzunlari masjid qurilishiga moslab qirqilgan, kaltaroqlari murabba shakldagi tosh poyustun ustiga koʻzagi va kallaklar ishlanib oʻrnatilgan. Hamma ustunlar muayyan mujassamot asosida joylashtirilgan. Masjid yonidagi minora XVII asrda qulab tushgan, XVIII asrda mayda pishiq gʻishtdan qayta tiklangan. Minora yuqoriga tomon ingichkalashib boradi. Tepasiga sharafa va gʻishtdan dandana xoshiya belbogʻlar ishlangan. Juma masjid bir necha bor taʼmirlangan. Shulardan biri boʻlgan taʼmiri 1990-yilda Xivaning 2500 yilligi...
