This hotel falls well below the Mercure standards elsewhere in the world. We encountered a very loud and frightening bashing noise on the wall and roof of our room which hotel staff blamed on the tenants above. This happened all 5 nights that we were there and was never sorted, even after complaining each and every night. This noise continued right through the night at approximately 10-20 min intervals and we struggled to get any sleep. We also encountered abusive drunks yelling obscenities in the corridors right outside our room. After the first night of noise we were given a bottle of wine and chocolate with an apology letter for what we had encountered but we would have preferred if the noise issue was simply dealt with or if they could have moved us to another room but they did nothing and didn’t even provide feedback each time we phoned to complain and query the noise. The shower was dirty and we had to ask for towels to be restocked as the cleaner took old ones and often did not replace them so we were left with nothing. It appears that most levels are occupied by permanent tenants who didn’t give a damn about paying hotel customers and the hotel obviously had no control over the tenancy section of the building. The hotel seemed to be full of dodgy characters coming and going and as two females travelling for business we felt very unsafe. The hotel is certainly not inviting as you would expect the Mercure brand to be. We entered through a scummy side door into a small dirty corridor with a reception in the wall. The whole place was so uninviting. We booked this specific hotel because they are part of the Accor group and having never been there before, was led to believe it would have standards to meet. After visiting, I seriously feel it should be stripped of the Mercure and...
Read moreSo where do I start. Good points Great staff especially Joe who gave us such a warm welcome and assisted us with every enquiry. Room service was fantastic and the food evening meals and breakfast were exceptional. Bad points. Community clinic across the road from the hotels main entrance where drug deals go on in broad daylight and in the clear view of guests. The hotel is tired and needs alot of maintenance is required as towel rails falling off of the wall. The showers white grout black had mould in it which is not good for public health. The TV on the wall has a hole in the wall and light comes from the next room. This also causes issues with noise and being kept awake as the next room had a loud TV was due to poor sound insulation. This was identified to the reception (loud noise from other rooms) you can hear the people above walked and stomping around and and also banging on walls at their neighbours too. The cleanliness of the room was below par, dirty and Dusty air-con unit. Dusty wall fixtures and as stated dirty shower.
Would I come back no, as these issues are serious and need to be addressed and it's not the staff or the food it's the construction of the rooms. We have since moved hotels and had to forfeit a nights booking costs to enable us to sleep. I have stayed at many mecure hotels and I was very dissapointed by this one. I hope for the sake of the hotel chain the issues are able to be rectified with the assistance of the community health centre and police to stop the issues across the road going on. I am also able to assist the hotel if they wish to speak to me about...

Location: a one minute walk from the Queen Victoria Market and the tram station there. Very handy to get to and from the hotel.
Staff: Very friendly receptionist, easy check in.
Room layout: nicely set out, not too small. Kitchenette is fine and the blackout curtains work well.
Bed: mattress and pillows are fairly comfortable.
Power points on both sides of the bed. A lot of places are scabby and only have them on one. This is a pleasant surprise.
Check out time: 11am is decent compared to some other hotels. Time enough.
Cons:
Shower: loose fitted and with a very weak pressure. At least the hot water lasts, but that lack of pressure considerably drops my rating as a good shower is the cornerstone of every one of my hotel stays.
Toilet: far too close to the wall. If I was any fatter I would've had a lot of problems. Awkward positioning of toilet paper too. Set up seems to be for a small kid.
TV: smart TV functions are disabled and Smart Motion is enabled? Trash. Can be fixed from the debug menu but shouldn't be necessary. Settings are back to hotel default after turning set off.
WiFi: Free and unlimited means nothing if it's a snail pace to be honest. Just use your data if you have it. At least that's an option though unlike a certain hotel on Spencer Street…
Thin floors/ceilings: if someone is walking, believe me, you're going hear it! Even if I walked gently I could hear myself and those staying above me weren't so kind with their footsteps.
On the whole I'd stay here again if there was a great special. It's a nice hotel let down by a few relatively easy...
