I recently had the pleasure of dining at Kenangan Indonesian Restaurant in Melbourne, and I must say, it was a truly memorable experience. This hidden gem offers a delightful journey into the vibrant and flavorful world of Indonesian cuisine, and I had the opportunity to indulge in some of their most iconic dishes.
To start, I ordered the Nasi Goreng, a classic Indonesian fried rice dish. Kenangan's rendition of Nasi Goreng was exceptional. The fragrant rice was perfectly stir-fried with a medley of vegetables, egg, and a choice of protein. The flavors were well-balanced, and the addition of sweet soy sauce and a hint of spiciness elevated the dish to a whole new level. It was a satisfying and hearty dish that left me craving for more.
Next, I tried the Bebek Garing, which is crispy duck. The Bebek Garing at Kenangan was a true delight. The duck was expertly cooked to achieve a crispy skin while retaining tender and succulent meat inside. The accompanying sauce provided a burst of flavors, combining the richness of spices with a touch of sweetness. The dish was a perfect balance of textures and flavors, making it a standout on the menu.
For the main course, I opted for the Nasi Rendang, a quintessential Indonesian dish. Kenangan's rendition of Nasi Rendang was exceptional. The tender chunks of beef were simmered in a rich and fragrant coconut milk-based sauce, infused with a blend of aromatic spices. The result was a melt-in-your-mouth experience that showcased the complexity and depth of Indonesian flavors. Served with steamed rice, it was a hearty and satisfying dish that left me longing for more.
I also had the opportunity to try the Nasi Balado, which was rice with chicken covered in a creamy sauce and it did not disappoint. The combination created a robust and spicy flavor profile that was balanced by the freshness of the accompanying vegetables. The dish had a bold and fiery kick that added an exciting twist to the meal.
To accompany my meal, I ordered Kangkung Tumis, which is stir-fried water spinach. The kangkung was cooked to perfection, maintaining a crisp texture while absorbing the flavors of the aromatic garlic and savory sauce. It was a delightful and refreshing side dish that complemented the richness of the other dishes.
The service at Kenangan Indonesian Restaurant was attentive and friendly. The staff members were knowledgeable about the menu and provided helpful suggestions. They ensured that every aspect of the dining experience was enjoyable, from prompt service to accommodating special requests.
The restaurant itself had a cozy and inviting ambiance, with Indonesian-inspired decor that added to the cultural experience. The atmosphere was relaxed, making it an ideal place for a casual meal with friends or a cozy dinner for two.
In conclusion, Kenangan Indonesian Restaurant in Melbourne is a true gem for Indonesian cuisine enthusiasts. With its flavorful Nasi Goreng, succulent Bebek Garing, aromatic Nasi Rendang, spicy Nasi Balado, and refreshing Kangkung Tumis, it offers a tantalizing journey into the diverse and vibrant flavors of Indonesia. Coupled with attentive service and a welcoming ambiance, Kenangan Indonesian Restaurant is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Indonesian culinary experience...

I can't wait for these guys to find their permanent home in Melbourne ...
They started as a take-away establishment in the most #lockdown City in the world ... which unfortunately I've never ordered, just not a fan of #takeaway food ... even lots of friends were raving about it, sorry friends 😕 But I'm just so glad that we waited until we can all dine-in so we can appreciate their offering straight from the kitchen.
After the end of the lockdown, we've been there a couple of times in their temporary home for dinners ... I think we have nearly gone through all the dishes on the Menu ... so far, easily the best and the most authentic Indonesian food in Melbourne by far, would be very hard to find a better ones. Their "peanut sauce" and "Bakso Goreng" are even better than some places in Jakarta, Indonesia ... and at the rate that they are charging it's just unbelievably good ... they could have charge more and I'll be happy with that, the most expensive dish on the Menu was the $18.50 Ikan Goreng (fried fish) ... well fried, crispy too, yes, some Indonesians would argue that is not in the same calibre as the Gurame Goreng at the legendary Laguna restaurant Jakarta that we are fond of, however for a young, relatively newby establishment overseas, outside Indonesia, they've presented well and should be proud in showcasing their version of ikan goreng here in Melbourne 👏👏👏 ... and my Santa's wish list ... lingering over a fresh snapper drizzled with lime and dipped in hot sambal over hot steamy rice in Melbourne 😀😀😀 and a bit of #achar 🤣🤣🤣
For Indonesian food fans in Melbourne, it would be hard to find a better Nasi Beef Rendang at $13.90 or their chunky Sate Ayam $13.00 (5 skewers and rice) and dip some of that #sambal (not too hot to cater for most) ... generous portion, simple and yet attractively presented too.
Surely more good things in the future for this Indonesian establishment ... building memories in their new home.
All the very best in 2022 and onward to team at Kenangan; Nick, Alex and Grace ... keep on serving those delicious Indonesian dishes ... I'm sure we'll be back for more and we thank...

REVIEW: I decided to get something a little bit heavier this year at Kenangan! Unfortunately this wasn't my favourite - the meatiness of the prime ribs isn't quite my vibe, but it was great to try. Kenangan still give generous wedges of cucumber, which washes down great with the iced coconut drink. Note to self: Try the Ayam Goreng Kremes (1/4 Fried Chicken) next time!
Such a great joint that offers slices of Indonesian food. Walk up to the counter to get your table number, and you can order through the QR code. Fuss free. ORDERED (APRIL 2023): 🍱 Ayam Bakar Kecap: 1/4 Grilled chicken with sweet & savoury sauce served with steam rice and your choice of sambal ($16.20) (Sambal Terasi: spicy as) 🥥 Es Kelapa: Iced coconut drink with coconut bits ($7.00)
I spent $23.55 here.
REVIEW: A lean, mean, fighting machine, Kenangan is a force to be reckoned with. When your food out comes hot, flavoured and delicious in under 10 minutes, it's a new personal best in my books. ❤️ The grilled chicken is marinated so wonderfully and memorably juicy. When the chicken meat easily pulls away from the bone with your fork you know it's perfectly cooked. The little rice crackers are cute, while the two chunks of cucumber keeps it refreshing and light. Servings are a great size too. Beware of the sambal terasi! It was too spicy for me, so I'm definitely going to order something more milder next time.
Coconut drink was great and real refreshing to sip on. I had little sips in the beginning, but leaving it till after the meal was a bad idea. Your mouth has hit all the savoury tones, so the coconut drink lost all its subtle flavour and sweetness. It was too similar to water. 🤧
Service is straightforward. Line up at the counter where they ask you if you're eating in/ takeaway and you can choose to eat on the big communal table or outside. I did see a reservation sign, so I think you can book! However, I'd say 98% of patrons were just walk in. With service this efficient, walk in is...
