Stay away from Melia Jardim Europa; it's a dishonest place. They should change its name to Bates Motel. I had to go through surgery and decided to stay at this hotel to make my life easier. Instead, it turned into the worst nightmare. I made my reservation from a hospital and went directly from the hospital to this hotel, escorted by a nurse, and was visibly sick, full of stitches and bruises. I made a reservation for four nights from Feb 18 through Feb 22. I was alone in my suite when the fire alarm started very loudly. I tried to call the front desk concierge and explore other options, but no one answered. I went outside, and all the other guests panicked, including an old lady who could not go down the stairs. The elevators were not working either. The speakers wouldn't give us instructions, so we went downstairs. I had 68 stitches in my abdomen and multiple on my face. I was unable to walk. Someone reminded us of a recent case of a hotel in Thailand that caught on fire, killing many people, including Brazilians. We went downstairs with wet towels, attempting to protect ourselves from the smoke. When we all finally got downstairs, they cynically told us it had been a false alarm; the same thing had happened earlier that day. I was in disbelief because they didn't offer any apology. The elevator was working again, and I went back to my suite. I was bleeding. I called my surgeon, who told me to bear still and that the nurse would be there soon to take care of the broken stitches, which she did because I left her with one spare key so I wouldn't have to leave the bed to open the door for her. On the next day, my physician came and told me that I would likely go back to the hospital because of the damage caused by going down the stairs. Unfortunately, I had to leave the Melia Jardim Europa after two horrible nights and go back to the hospital. Before, I asked to speak with the manager to ask if she had an idea of the extent of the problem Melia Jardim Europa caused me. The manager gave me another excuse for the fire alarm, saying it wasn't their fault. Still, another guest was smoking in a room. She lied to avoid holding any accountability, at least an apology. I checked out, and there was no time of health to debate with them, but they assured me that the security deposit and the two nights I didn't use would go back to my American credit card. It never did. After leaving the hospital, I made another reservation using Expedia for the Marriot. Yet, Melia Jardim Europa never refunded me for the nights I never used. They should have refunded me for the entire reservation, but I decided not to fight; I only wanted to have back more than 1,000 USD that I paid to stay at the worst hotel of my life. By the way, the food was horrible. Any 5-star hotel in Brazil has several natural juices, but they don't, and they have no vegetable options for dinner. Sao Paulo has plenty of good hotel options. My case was life-threatening, but would you stay at a hotel with zero sense of ethics that doesn't return the security deposit and nights you didn't use? It's been more than one week today, and Expedia is still unable to find a solution, and Melia Jardim Europa will not refund my...
Read moreLet me preface this, there is no way to give half stars or I would give a 3.5-stars, but it is not an option.
In my last few trips to SP, I have been spoiled. I have stayed at the Unique, which is probably one of the best properties in SP. I chose the Melia on the recommendation of my colleague, who's office is 1-block away.
It is a very nice hotel with very good security. The room was spacious, clean, and had a good bathroom. The shower was a little small for me, and I am not a big guy.
A couple of complaints about this property. First, they pride themselves as an "International Property". If that was the case, they would have a few more employees that speak English and have at least 1 English speaking news channel (CNN, Fox, CNBC, Bloomberg, etc... IDC). The language barrier was extremely difficult at the restaurant. I needed to use Google translate to get me through my order. Which is a first, this is my 7th time to SP and never needed it before...
I always got a big and warm hello from the concierge Alesandra. She explained to me that they were suffering from a seriously bad staffing shortage. I totally understand during the current state of things. I noticed the staffing problems at dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. The same 2 dudes that were manning the restaurant were also handling the in-room dining (They need a raise!)
With that being said, their shortage of staff totally closed down the "Level" class of rooms and service. I generally entertain clients at the hotel and use the executive lounge as a place to meet. Luckily for me, I was so close to my office, it really didn't matter.
The "Level" class rooms were much larger and a different caliber of amenities.
As a whole, it was a good stay. It is in a very convenient in relation to my office and a ton of great restaurants! I am sure by the next time I visit, they will correct their issues.
Edited because I had the concierge's name wrong. I am...
Read moreDo not stay here. The hotel is under construction but they do not make that explicitly clear. We arrived today and 90% of the lobby is boarded up. Only a small cafe and lobby desks. All the amenities are closed including the rooftop.
The hotel is very poorly taken care of. On our floor the hallway was old and musty. There was carpet that was badly damaged in the hallway, there was no decorations or personal character and it smelt bad.
The rooms were worse sadly. Incredibly small bathroom, uncomfortable bed, and incredibly out of date for a “5 star” hotel. We requested to be refunded for our stay and the manager and front desk staff were accommodating but they pulled a fast one on us and had our reservation booked a day in advance since we had an early check in (we did not do this or consent to this) I didn’t want to fight so I paid the night for the 2 rooms even though we didn’t stay. They should have refunded us this amount though since there’s vacancy and we were treated in a dishonest fashion.
All in all, this a 2 star hotel/property. If it was priced properly with clear communication about the condition of the property, I’m sure it would be fine. However we’re here on a weeklong business trip and we’re looking for an actual 4-5 star hotel with the appropriate amenities. I would never recommend someone...
