This hotel is really unique in that it is an old building incorporated from 1936 into a modern one. The modern one that is built on top of it and incorporated into it. It has these interesting geometric art deco lines from the outside. I believe it lights up at night? It somehow fits into the older building. You wonder how they made the foundation deep enough for the new building to stand because it is at least 19 floors?
From the street level, it’s quite inconspicuous. It’s busy and a bit chaotic on the street level. There’s a roast duck restaurant on the ground floor near the entrance. There’s only these small graceful silver letters announcing the hotel name and the gated door repeats the slender silver motif. Once you enter through the door, it seems like you’ve stepped into another world. The hallway is lined with golden mirrors and warm marble. A subtle scent of flowers.
There are these wood grain neutral wall reliefs in a lotus art deco pattern and a black and white marble mosaic floor in the lobby. It’s simple and elegant. Fun to sit in the walnut birdcage chairs on the balcony and imagine the people from before. Great place to have private conversations and look out onto the street level. I believe the wood patio doors and tile are original. The metal fireplace is revitalized and definitely original. With the velvet green lobby chairs, shiny marble floors, bright gold accents and details like the phonograph it really comes together beautifully! It feels like this building has soul. The hotel desk clerks are super helpful too.
The hotel rooms are large for Hong Kong and it’s the height that makes it feel larger. Vertical lines in the bathroom and glass enclosures makes it feel spacious. The dark wood cabinets have plenty of space to organize your items. There is a small fridge. The floor to ceiling windows let in so much light and the nighttime view is dazzling. The cars below and the lights of the buildings shimmer and glow. The neighboring building has its back to you - so no worries about peering into anyone’s home.
There is a floor just for the museum photos of the original building. The lighting makes you feel as if you are in a glamorous sepia toned photo. But there’s no one in there and it’s completely empty besides the chairs and tables. Whoever the owners are, they must really love and revere the original architecture enough to have a whole floor dedicated to history. One singular suggestion is to have this floor as a breakfast cafe with the photos…it would be so convenient. The nearby neighborhood has some restaurants, but you do have to walk a bit to find a good one. The breakfast place I liked which matched the mood of this hotel was Le Reveur (the Daydream, in French). Feels like both are evocative of a different time and place. The hotel clerks also gave some good recommendations, but they were not in the same vein as 1936.
Kudos to this team for making this boutique, jewelry box of a building come to life! A peaceful respite in the middle of Mongkok. Much appreciation and admiration for how seamlessly the architects and designers blended old with...
Read moreHigh possibility ghost living in Room 701. Checked in afternoon to Room 701 on June 27 2025 with Agoda.com and was excited but realized marks on right side wall behind that had dark brown patches color of dried blood but shrugged it off. It was most likely not blood deep scratches covered with other paint not matching to rest of the wall. Left the room with belongings and slippers pointed towards the door, came back slippers where diagonally directed towards the bed, shrugged it off, wore slippers but suddenly standing my legs tripped and a slipper fell off so tried to look for it everywhere and under the bed and it was missing!!! Ok having had experience sleeping at another hotel with ghost, this was a huge warning, immediately in PJ’s tried to calmly without alarming the ghost leave and packed everything. Went to 3rd floor guest services and told them what happened, the feed back was can’t refund as it is not scientific saying there is ghost but if you ask many Chinese in HK about if they believe in ghost majority will say yes no need scientific explanation! Around 10:45pm I checked out and didn’t get my refund of HKD$1,171.45 as they claimed not scientific saying there is ghost in a super old renovated building. The point is for those ghost believers, you know there is ghost in buildings almost or over 100 years but won’t be back for sure! No solution and had to find another place to stay for the night! Good luck if you check in to one of these rooms occupied by something they claim...
Read moreI spent one night at this hotel and while my experience had its positives, I felt that it didn't quite justify the high price tag for a 3-star hotel. The check-in process was smooth, and the staff were friendly and accommodating, which set a positive tone for my stay. The room was clean and adequately furnished, though it felt somewhat dated and lacked some of the modern touches I expected for the price. The bed was comfortable, but the amenities were minimal—just the basics without any extra comforts that often make a stay more enjoyable. One of the standout features was the location; it was conveniently situated near several attractions and dining options, making it easy to explore the area. However, considering the cost of the room, I anticipated a bit more in terms of services or facilities. In conclusion, while my stay was satisfactory, I believe there are better options available for the price point. If you're looking for a comfortable stay without breaking the bank, it might be worth exploring other hotels in the area that offer more value...
