The Astor House Hotel is a grand old dame from another era. The hotel has a remarkable history so be sure to look it up.
I stayed in a Richard Executive room and was very pleased. The rooms enormous! I could have had a cocktail party in there and still had room for the string quartet!
The bed was comfortable and the renovated bathrooms are clean and bright with a separate shower and bath (not 'over bath shower'). I had no problems with water temperature or pressure.
The room had wired internet which worked without drama; however there was no wifi signal if you were wanting to connect a mobile device. There is wifi available in the lobby though so it's a good excuse to head down for a coffee or some dumplings.
The peacock ballroom (breakfast venue) was being used for a film shoot while I was there so I can not really provide any feedback on that front; however, I did dine at the Richard restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by the varied menu of both western and chinese food. There was also a reasonable wine list.
Location wise, the Astor House is at the top end of the Bund, it's a great spot to base yourself for wandering the streets of Shanghai. It was also relatively easy to get a cab. From the hotel, there is always a concierge to arrange a car for you. To the hotel, the front desk card includes little map so i never had any problems returning from my days adventures.
The hotel has a beauty salon service. I took advantage of the in-house service and had a facial. This was provided in my room and was bliss. I can recommend it for an evening wind down.
Tip: Pay the little extra for a Richard Executive room and have space to stretch out...
Read moreStayed at the hotel for 2 weeks (I upgraded my room), so opinion is based on this time period, both good and bad. My review may have a long list of negative statements but, quality is in the details! 👌
Good: Beautiful Victorian style hotel with history! Convenient location off "The Bund." Great views 😁of the financial district at night. Close to bus stops (5-10 minutes). 20 minutes walk 🚶🏼to East Nanjing Road (shopping area).
Bad: Maid service for room is somewhat sad. Examples, (1) never really makes the bed properly, (2) must request coffee each day, (3) only tidies up bathroom. For a 4+5 star hotel and price 🤑should be better 😔
The hotel kept turning the air conditioner on and off! 😤Therefore, some nights were uncomfortable😡. Told by hotel that the air conditioner off when the temperature will go down at night! Shanghai in May has big swings in temperatures which makes this a problem!
Wifi was sometimes fast 💨...
