Great views but choose the timing..day/night..weather/smog...city lights off/on. This is a postcard scene worth visiting but if you choose the wrong timing you may be put off. On our first day in Shanghai our daughter and I walked the 2 miles from our hotel and noticed the smog was high (218 AQI). The view from the Bund was good and when you see the Oriental Pearl Tower (Dongfang Mingzhu) want to see it at night. My wife and I went back a few nights later, the smog was lower (AQI 115) and arrived on the Bund at 5:45pm. We noticed the skyline lights seemed to be off or muted. As we strolled along taking pictures suddenly all of the building lights on both sides came on..promptly at 6pm. We heard later they turn off at 10pm. It was a great view as you can seen in our pictures.
GOOD Wonderful skyline on both sides of the river Easy to find as long as you don't turn south or north...you'll hit the river going east from downtown Shanghai. Bus and Subway are the quickest and easiest way to go. Cheap at 3 RMB(.50-.75 cents USD) each way. Both are best used in non-rush hour like any major city. Lots of photo opportunities walking back from the Bund
BAD On days with really bad smog you the other side of the river will be very hazy If you can't stay until the city lights come on you then miss best part On windy days in the winter bring hats and gloves. Hands get numb trying to take photos and there is no shelter from the wind...
