If you love art deco, this is the place for you. The real deal. Genuine article. Built by the English in an historic building two blocks from the Bund, this hotel is drenched in marble with black and gold accents. Large art deco paintings hang from the walls. Elevators have original mechanisms. It feels like you are stepping back in time. Rooms are nice and clean. Our view was of the inside courtyard - not the best view - but they do offer rooms with better views. Lots of food and shops within walking distance. Not a lot of English speakers, but translation apps work great. Be sure to double check the address before you get there. There are several Metropole Hotels in this area. They are not the same company - just the same name. We ended up going to the wrong one at first, then walking forever with our luggage to find the right one. Also - try Grandma's restaurant one block toward the Bund. Their dumpling soup is particularly good and they will wrap up your left-overs, but charge you a nominal fee for containers. We loved this neighborhood! Very vibrant and full of life. Get a huge grapefruit from one of the small groceries and eat it like an orange - trust me. Delish! Hotel will set up taxis for you. Just take several of the hotel cards with hotel and address written in Mandarin. Give it to the taxi driver who...
Read moreGreat location, not too hard on the wallet as well. Moderately high tech with autosensing night lights, great iPhone friendly music system and a very advanced commode(!)
The breakfast was also satisfactory with an equal mix of Chinese as well as western dishes, though I would have appreciated a larger variety of dishes.
Very thoughtful of the hotel staff to notice I don’t use so many pillows on the bed after the first night so they cleared off the extra pillows to the left of the room and kept a single pillow for me to use starting the second night. Kudos 👌🏼
All the electric sockets are fitted with universal adapters so very tourist friendly.
Only drawback was they do no the air conditioning to cool, only to heat during this time of the year. Doesn’t matter much since outside it was around 12’C.
Turns out the Building was an heritage architecture also which I didn’t know before!
Would highly recommend just for the...
Read moreThe hotel is inthe heart of the Bund, it is near everything. The staff spoke english to enough to be understood and to understand. We have cancelled another hotel after our cruise to return to this hotel. The complentary breakfast was great, there was everything a westerners want to eat in the morning. The rooms were spacious and the bedding furniture comfortable. The AC could be control by the guests which was nice because it was dying hot outside. The only thing I would suggest is the swipe the floors and vaccum it (including the carpet). The toilet floors would have needed to be washed as we could see dryied spills on it (it could have been anything...). Besides that, the hotel has been recently renovated and the prise was unbeatable for its location. Would...
