The location was absolutely perfect—right next to a Starbucks, surrounded by endless shops, Pop Mart just a 3-minute walk away, department stores nearby, and multiple subway stations within 3–5 minutes.
The lobby was wonderful, with a great scent and atmosphere that immediately made us want to stay. However, cleanliness and noise were issues. We had to switch rooms once: the first room’s carpet was damp, almost as if someone had spilled or thrown up on it. Thinking it was clean, I stepped on it barefoot—very unpleasant. That room came with chocolate and fruit, while the second room (where we were moved) had a tote bag instead. It made me wonder if amenities varied by room.
The second room itself had a very awkward layout. Later, I realized it was right next to the housekeeping storage. You can imagine how many times that door opened and closed, slamming throughout the day. The layout was odd: you entered straight into the bathroom, with the closet inside, the fridge beside it, then the bedroom and desk area, with a large window on the left. Neither the first nor second room had a great view. Honestly, I didn’t bother to call again to switch rooms—it was too tiring. But the noise was relentless: slamming doors, neighbors playing music that echoed into the bathroom, and groups of women laughing and chatting loudly at night. If you’re sensitive to noise, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
Amenities: The rooftop bar was quite small but offered a stunning view. However, the seats with the best view required bottle service, which felt a bit limiting. Upstairs, there was also a separate rooftop area with a restaurant/chill space. We didn’t dine there, just looked around and left, so I’m not sure how the system works. Still, if you simply want to enjoy the view, you can walk up there, take a look around, and it’s worth doing so. The pool was unimpressive—small and uninviting, and while there may have been a sauna, I didn’t check. The gym was tiny but decent.
Breakfast wasn’t particularly special. The dumplings were tasty, and the offerings seemed to rotate every two days, but overall it didn’t feel like a true 5-star hotel breakfast. A couple of breads, some fruits—just average.
Service is the main reason I gave 4 stars. While they did move us to another room, I still felt they shouldn’t have assigned such problematic rooms in the first place. The initial room especially should have been inspected more carefully before handing over the keys. On the other hand, whenever we called for anything, the staff responded very quickly and efficiently—hard to stay upset because of how prompt and helpful they were.
The hotel’s gifts and small touches were very cute: tote bags, chocolates (the milk chocolate was delicious, the white less so, but I still think about it), slippers for both indoor and outdoor use, Le Labo amenities, and even travel-sized gifts to take home.
Downsides: The bathroom was dangerously slippery—so much so I wondered how they haven’t been sued yet. They did provide a mat, and if you use it, it’s fine, but the mat is small, so you still need to be careful. I didn’t use the bathtub—it just felt off. The bedding was slightly damp, and shockingly, I found someone else’s hair inside the sheets. For those who aren’t too sensitive, it might be fine, but we even bought our own sheets and covers at a nearby Miniso to feel more comfortable.
Overall, if you’re not too particular, this could still be a satisfying stay. But for the price, I think many guests might feel a bit disappointed. Still, the staff’s fast response whenever we called for help made it hard to stay upset—that’s why I...
Read moreI don't usually write reviews but this stay (and our previous stay) at The Shanghai Edition were truly wonderful. We previously stayed here over Christmas 2024 and that stay was such a fantastic experience (from the room, to the service, to the BEST concierge Benjamin and best Rooms Director Taylor) that we decided to come back for another holiday over Easter! We rarely ever come back so quickly but The Shanghai Edition was everything we wanted and MORE! ||Benjamin and the concierge team go ABOVE AND BEYOND even BEFORE you arrive at the hotel to book everything from dinner reservations to private shopping afternoons at any store that you ask. At some point, I even wanted to know what items they had in the store before I arrived and they obliged, sending me the exact photos of very hard to find items that I was interested in. For reservations - We had a dinner booking at a very exclusive restaurant (hard to book but Benjamin's team did it!) and we were running late since we came from the airport. In order for us not to lose the table, the hotel sent someone to sit at the table to make sure the reservation was honored. I didn't even ask for this but they simply went above and beyond to allow us to keep the table. It was such a generous gesture. ||The next day, they helped me locate my passport that I had left at a department store and very calmly assured me that my passport was just at the Tax Refund counter at the store. Thank you Taylor for finding my passport! ||As a Platinum Elite member, they upgraded us to a Bund View Suite halfway through our stay and it's honestly one of the most amazing suites and views you will ever find. The corner bathrub with The Bund View makes you fall in love with the city and the hotel even more. ||The BREAKFAST is FANTABULOUS. I would come back to this hotel for the breakfast alone! There is a well curated buffet of pastries, chinese delicacies and western breakfast items AND on top of that, there is an order-all-you-want separate menu of hot items like eggs benedict, avocado toasts, chinese dimsum, rice meals, congee, fresh fruit juices, anything you like, name it, it's on the list! They serve it so quickly, hot and fresh! It's such a relief from your typical hotel buffet with food items sitting on the counter for an hour and swimming in its own fat. This is an excellent way of mixing a buffet and breakfast-to-order and The Shanghai Edition does this EXTREMELY WELL. ||Overall, we had such an amazing time and can't wait to...
Read moreMy family and I spent a week at Shanghai and stayed at The Edition. The location is ideal, especially for first-time travelers since it is central to all the major shops, eateries, and is just a few mins walk from the train station for those who prefer to explore the city and travel like the locals do.||The Edition is without doubt a five-star hotel, boasting of fantastic facilities and top-notch service. It also offers a breathtaking view of the river on the higher floors.||Given that my family and I are limited by our Mandarin fluency, I reached out to the hotel to help me arrange for dining reservations, tours and, even a Hanfu photo-shoot for my daughter. There were a lot of questions on my end with a long list of activities that I needed help with in arranging, and Mr. Benjamin Zhou was most patient in answering each and every question in my countless emails and went over and above in ensuring that the needs of the family were met. My husband was on a personal search for a particular Shanghainese dessert (酒酿)that we could not find anywhere around. Mr Zhou went out of his way and got my husband the dessert from a popular local eatery that only the locals knew of so that the hubs could get his fill. Shout out also to the lovely Naggie who was always there and assisted us in translations, recommendations, and liaising with the photographer to acquire the photos from the photo shoot and there's also Mia who was the bravest lady I have ever met who helped me with an incident in the room. The cleaning lady was so friendly and helpful.||I have traveled to many major cities globally and stayed at 5 star hotels and world-class resorts, and I have to say The Edition Shanghai trumps the rest. There are 5-star hotels and then there is The Shanghai Edition in a league of its own. The Edition's fantastic team led by Mr Zhou takes the crown hands down. Being effortlessly professional yet personal, they truly made the difference in ensuring that my family and my needs were paramount throughout our stay, making the impossible possible, raising the bar beyond 5 stars. I highly recommend The Shanghai Editiion and am looking forward to returning there on my next trip back...
