Mingtown Nanjing Road Youth Hostel — Hotel in Shanghai

Breakfast - didn’t eat there |Room & Facilities - 2 stars |Staff - 2.5 stars |Ambiance/style - 1 stars |Location - 4 stars ||Final grade - 2 stars ||Although having an excellent location, minutes away from the famous East Nanging Road and the subway station, the hostel itself offers a very poor experience. The sitting area downstairs could have been nice if people were actually there, but instead it is dull and vacant. There is no ambiance or friendly staff/people you usually expect to find in a hostel. Not all the staff speaks English so it’s not easy to communicate or get help in terms of directions, recommendations etc. Breakfast, like the hostel, did not look good and so we did not eat there like we have done in other hostels we stayed. Preferred to grab a bite outside. The room was pretty awful, with a reallyyy bad smell of sewage coming from the bathroom, making it almost disgusting to shower. But at least it had hot running water and an air conditioner. The only thing good about this depressing hostel and room was that it made us spend more in the city because we just didn’t want to go back to the room - great for sightseeing, but not so great for a honeymoon. I wish we would have spent a bit more (or even a lot more) and gone anywhere else, but I guess that if you’re on an extremely low budget and have zero expectations and all the other hostels in the city are not available, you can settle (really settle) for...

First and foremost this Hostel Complex is damn clean, ive stayed both in the dorm rooms and the single rooms and they both have great cleanliness standards even in the shared washrooms are always cleaned constantly. I understand that dorm rooms may not have bath products but for the Double Room? seriously? theres no toothbrush nor shower gels (they sell them at reception). The room itself was nice and quite spacious. Id recommend doubles to book a double room over Dorm rooms. The staff are abit timid not entirely friendly, they seem rather sarcastic. The food downstairs are well priced and okay for a quick feed but theres better options just outside. The common rooms kitchen was well stocked when i browsed through the building and really clean. Location is everything if you dont have time on your side and this is a great place to stay at. Late checkouts arent possible so youll need to inform them before hand if your leaving super early in the morning, i just dropped my key with security one time. This is the worst hostel I’ve stayed in so far, but it’s not a terrible place at all. I personally value the people and atmosphere at the place the highest and that’s why I would prefer not to stay here again.|The staff was not very good in english for the most part, and some of them seemed as if they were either mad or scared when you asked of help from them. Often you’d get the help but they’d almost never smile. All of them quite silent. |Also, it seems like some of the people who stayed there used the place as their home permanently. In general, it was mostly chinese people who lived there. |The atmosphere was pretty bad for socializing. Most people in the common areas would sit alone on their phones.|The hostel seemed fairly empty when we stayed there but we were still put in a crammed 6-bed dorm on the top floor. A shared dorm with a chinese girl amongst others, and she would always turn on the lights while we were sleeping and wouldn’t turn them off.|The facilities were pretty good in general tho.
