A Unique Hotel with Hits and Misses
I stayed at Zelva Negra in El Poblado, Medellín, and the experience was a mix of positives and drawbacks.
First, the atmosphere and design are worth noting. The hotel has a rustic charm, with beautiful animal-themed paintings that perfectly reflect the "Selva" concept. The sinks made of rock and unique decorations were lovely touches.
The staff were generally kind and gentle, with the housekeeping team standing out for their friendliness and attentiveness—they cleaned the room daily, and I truly appreciated their effort. However, not all staff made me feel welcome. As a gay traveler, I felt some discomfort from a few staff members who lacked courtesy and focus on guests, which was disappointing.
The room itself was very comfortable, with a fantastic bed and great air conditioning. However, the lack of a cozy seating area was a downside—a couple of couches instead of just a chair would have elevated the space.
The location is excellent, situated right in the heart of the tourist area, close to Provenza and Parque Lleras—perfect for dining and nightlife. It’s also conveniently near a supermarket and drugstore, which was a big plus.
One of my main reasons for choosing this hotel was the swimming pool, but it turned out to be a letdown. It’s too shallow to swim in and feels more like a small pond for children. That said, the rooftop bar was a highlight, offering a great spot for drinks with a view.
The lack of parking and the absence of amenities like a spa or on-site attractions made it clear this isn’t a hotel for relaxing indoors. The food was also underwhelming.
I would recommend Zelva Negra for short trips focused on exploring Medellín, but not for those seeking a hotel experience centered around comfort...
Read moreI was going to stay at Dan Carlton.. I guess they're two of them now. But it wasn't available so I checked this place out. I might stay here from now on. The people that work here are as nice as can be and the room is beautiful. The sink looks like it's carved out of a stone or something and the shower is just crazy water pours down from like 12 ft ceilings. I come to find out Dan Carlton wants $100 a night If you go there with somebody and don't go through all kinds of hoops. I don't specifically know What they want and I've always loved the place But this hotel really surprised me, it's beautiful. I just think the people at this hotel were so nice, I would choose this place again in a second. And I have had to go up to my room and get something with who I was with in the past at The other place and they were like we need your ID and a DNA swab. And it's a little rude and embarrassing to tell the truth. We're not talking heroin addicted women I just splash water on their face to bring to my room or something these are good people who were friends .. I thought that was standard protocol but I guess it isn't. And again we're not talking anything shady it's just friends and people I came here to meet and stuff. Over here they are as nice as can be. I didn't have to deal with any of it. I highly recommend Hotel...
Read moreChecked in February 26..room was spacious and clean, shower with glass enclosure in the room, toilet in separate area but so tiny you can sit properly, have to turn sideways which makes the door unable to close.. One bed in the room, which is too small for 2 adults.. 2 beds would have been better.. The hotel is centrally located which gives the option of walking to the park, restaurants, cambios and other amenities easily.. Breakfast served daily is done to order which takes a bit of time.. This however is the same for most mornings.. Had breakfast 5days out of 6 and passion juice was served, no other option was offered.. Eggs and bacon was the main protein along with toast, coffee or tea.. The room I got was close to the road, so all the noise, not of buses or cars only but of men laughing and chatting, could be heard which disrupted sleep until 4am...front desk clerks should know at least another language, preferably English.. If you see your business growing.. We can't always rely on Google translate.. I'd definitely recommend or revist this hotel but will request a room located to the back and...
