I am not one to complain when it comes to backpacking... it is a privilege to experience the unique differences of the world... but differences do not excuse outright discriminatory behaviour. Let me say that we expect to interact with a range of individuals and with the language barriers there will be miscommunication however, this is not excusable in that regard. Most we met at rocking j's were wonderful... Jay the owner on the other hand... needs a cultural reset. We met him at the hostel bar where we exchanged that my friend and I were Australian and he originates from the US. However, he continued the conversation with my friend "Australia, but what kind of asian are you? Because you're like a big Asian and usually they're small. At least you're sleek, like a Ferrari, a fun ride." We are two young girls and so have come accustomed to inappropriate comments however, the comments only began there "but yes don't walk at night alone... where there are sheep there are wolves, and you two are beautiful sheep" suggesting we are easy targets does not make us feel comfortable in your hostel nor does it offset racially motivated comments because you find us attractive. Unfortunately there were too many to recount them all, extending to other culutres and racial minorities, but I will leave you with this. In the action of offering a smoke "hey Asian, want to look alot more Asian?" Pulling back his eyes as he leaned into her face... suggesting the smoke will make them slanted. My gorgeous friend called him up on it to which he replied that "maybe in America or Australia that would be offensive but it's not here". That is an ignorant excuse and it is her right to determine whether she felt racially attacked. I wish any of these were an exaggeration but instead all I have to say is keep in mind where and to whom you want to give your...
Read moreManagement: Please speak with Kellen at reception. There was an additional lock put on my locker. When I asked for it to be removed I had to wait until 1:20pm for the next person on shift. Kellen wouldn't open my locker and ignored me. The hostel was withholding my passport, and credit card illegally. I was checked out, and leaving. I had no problems with the hostel, or premises, until I was leaving. I had to wait 1.5hrs for the lock to be opened. An employee with authority abused his power and I felt unsafe, and all I wanted was to leave. Take note in this online review, this isn't good, or wise of staff members to do this to customers. Withholding passports, and credit cards are illegal, and I didn't owe any money.
You have my contact information, if you chose to email and talk about this further I m happy to set up a time with you.
Another women opened the locker for me without hesitation and apologized, so thank you to her for being there.
UPDATE Management has never contacted me about this scenario. If you stay at this location as a single female traveller, be aware of the guy named Kellen (if he is still employed or around the area). I would consider myself a fairly experienced traveler over the years. Rockin J's is the first and ONLY place that has had an employee/staff member put an additional lock on my personal belongings locker. And since I know I had already payed and was LEAVING, I could not leave the premices without my passport or money. Show this review to Management and let them know how important it is not to have creepy male staff in charge of computers, or access to lockers! Management should atleast notify the public that this situation was acknowledged. Females being held up in hostels isn't a positive review/good for word of mouth once people start reading this. (I stayed there...
Read moreThe hostel looks really cool and there is a lot to do!
We went there with a group of 14. A bunch of us slept in tents, but most chose to sleep in hammocks. Both were clean and comfortable. Most of the time i fell asleep with music from the bar wich is right next to the hammocks. I think it went on till 02:00. Wich i didn't mind, but i can understand some people might not like it. After 02:00 there was most of the time a group of people on the beach with handdrums wich gave a really relaxed vibe. We joined them once and it was really relaxing, fun and cozy.
The owner is very nice. He organized a lot of activities. We got dance lessons, he organized a crabrace and i got a knife throwing lesson. We also got a tour through his home, wich probably was the most memorable activity! Is a really cool home with a lot of cool stuff, almost like a museum. Also really loved his dogs, they are really well trained!
I didn't really like the toilets and showers. There weren't a lot of them. Most of the time this wasn't a problem, but at my visit the hostel was (if i had to guess) only for 10% booked. Besides the amount of toilets and showers, the showers also weren't really good and i believe they only had cold water. Some hot water and a better showerhead should fix this.
Also didn't really like the food, but this might just be my taste... There were same places close to the hostel with really good food though!
So basically i had a great time here and i would really recommend this to others! The things i didn't really like are easily fixed or weren't that big of a problem but a inconvenience.
The hostel is also close to the Jaguar Rescue center, wich is really a...
