When we arrived to first check in we got to our room and realized the bed was a full instead of the queen that was listed in the add, we aren’t normally complainers, but I am a roller in my sleep and I would definitely roll off the bed and/or slap my partner with that size of bed, so we asked the front desk if we could upgrade to a bigger bed. They were really helpful with that and got us a room with a king size bed the next day and did not have us pay more since it was a room without a volcano view, so that was really nice of them. The “volcano view” that we originally paid extra for was blocked by some buildings so in our opinion the bigger bed without the view was a lot better since the view wasn’t great to begin with. The building has zero insulation so if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful hotel to relax, this is not the place. We could hear cars, bars, our neighbors, ect. all night long. However it’s give and take for the great location because you are right on the strip and can walk to almost everything, so the noise makes sense, there are just not very sturdy walls to keep a lot of that noise out. The hosts were nice and accommodating, however we had trouble with a shuttle we booked through them. We kept getting asked to book tours/shuttles through the hotel whenever we would walk past the front desk, but we unfortunately had all of our excursions booked beforehand, but we wanted to support the hotel so we decided to book the shuttle back to the airport to go home, through them. We explained to multiple of the front desk people that we needed to go to the Liberia airport instead of the San Jose airport because we flew into Liberia to go to Tamarindo for the first part of our trip and we had to fly out of the same airport. We understand the language barrier and don’t expect all of their locals to speak English as it is not their first language. However there was one front desk guy that understood us perfectly and was giving us all the details for booking a shuttle to Liberia. We were going to get cash out to pay for the shuttle since it’s cheaper without the taxes so when we got back to book the shuttle the front desk lady was there instead. We told her we were talking with the front desk guy about getting a shuttle to Liberia and could come back when he was there but she insisted she could help us and told us to go to lunch while she contacted different shuttle companies. Long story short she ended up booking us with a company that only goes to San Jose airport and San Jose was not written on the receipt so we thought she had gotten us the right shuttle by the conversation we had with her. The shuttle guy picked us up and didn’t speak any English at all so we got in and about half way through the drive realized we were going in the wrong direction. We then had to switch all our flights, stay the night in the airport, pay way more than we were expecting for all the changes and had to battle with them on the phone for a while to get refunded for the incorrect shuttle. They ended up refunding us eventually and we were really appreciative of that however that amount did not cover the time and money we had to use for our new flights. Again we understand the language barrier and don’t expect everyone to cater to us, however we could tell the lady couldn’t fully understand us and said we would work with someone else or book it online and she promised us she would be able to find the right shuttle for us. Anyway it’s all taken care of (mostly) now but at the time it was very frustrating for us being in a unknown country and having to figure out all this stuff because of a simple problem of putting the wrong airport. And we feel as though if you are working with tourists and scheduling important trips for them you should be able to understand what people are asking or at least ask your coworker to help out instead. Overall our stay was okay, rooms were clean enough, location was great, hosts were kind, price was alright, just an unfortunate mix up that happened to us. Wanted to give an...

Located in the middle of everything, you're in the perfect location for staying downtown LaFortuna yet sometimes you think you're in paradise.
No matter what room you're staying in, you can always grab views & pictures of the volcano from the various walkways.
I honestly can't say what is my favorite thing about this place. Because there's so many things. The heart of this well oiled operation starts at reception where Michelle or Nelson are there to greet you with a sincere smile and genuine care. The entire staff goes the extra mile to make sure all your needs are met.
One thing you can't avoid noticing is the value. Value is something that's hard to find in today's world of inflation and being ripped off.…of course THE BLUE this is not some five star resort where you pay $2000 a night up in the mountain somewhere… But I have to say if you want The perfect combination of daytime Zen and nighttime city life, at an unbeatable price, then this is undoubtably the best option!
There's so much love that has been put into THE BLUE SPA and, for me, energy is everything. As I compose this review, I'm sitting by the pool listening to the sound of the waterfall and the birds chirping and I feel like I've been transported to one of those $2000 night spots… Yet when I check my credit card balance, my heart doesn't sink to my stomach! In fact, I'm quite shocked at the reasonable price. Also I noticed how clean the pools been the entire week… And when I get out I don't smell like chlorine or chemicals.
Special touches: chain locks on your doors both for the balcony and the principal door, which makes me feel so safe at night as a solo female traveler Also, in the shower there's the option between the overhead flow or the handheld hose option. How convenient when shampooing and washing your body!
My room's chocolate tones, combined with white, as well as elegant, wooden , vaulted ceilings added a fabulous spaciousness and a happy night's sleep. Also worth noting, I often had both doors open (principal/balcony) which created a lovely breeze and never once did I see a mosquito. How is that even possible! Fast wifi, coffee maker & a mini fridge were yet more thoughtful amenities.
It's these DETAILS combined with exceptional customer service that bri g about a tranquil ambience and spa treatment guaranteed by THE BLUE.
An inexpensive optional breakfast is available, and the coffee they sell here is excellent. It's not too fruity nor is it at all bitter. It's so smooth, and yet again, it's priced at an unbeatable value!
In case you need a healing massage, a mani/pedi, or a haircut, everything is available right here. And it seemed everyone who stayed here maintained a positive mindset. I met a diverse range of friendly people including some super cool Australians!
Additionally, should you need transportation to an airport or other major city, or you want to take a tour to the famous waterfall, face the rapids, or try other adventures, Eduardo is right there to listen and suggest the best options possible.
Friends, I pride myself on giving honest reviews, and when I went to my room on the top floor, the first thing I did was inspect the air-conditioning unit. I literally opened it up to see if the filters were clean or not… & guess what, they were immaculate. As if they had just been cleaned. So I must acknowledge and give a special shout to Anielko and Martha! These two gals tag-team and keep clean, demonstrating so much pride in their work.
It is obvious that the owner cares very much about the health and safety of the guest. Even going so far as having a simple Spanish/English Bible in my room—a fabulous old-school touch that I absolutely adored.
From the bottom of my heart I send a huge hug and a huge thank you to the entire crew here at this fantastic hidden treasure in the middle of LaFortuna I can't wait to come back and LOSE MY BLUES at THE BLUE...

We were pointed by hotel staff at booking policy at bottom of our reservation page obtained from their booking website: "If cancelled or modified less than 5 days before date of arrival, or in case of no-show, the full booking item amount will be charged." You may also find this policy on free cancellation before 5 days check in date when you make a reservation at their website.
Why is there a 5 days ahead requirement for free cancellation at this Blue Hotel? I later guessed they figure people would rarely stay at La Fortuna more than 5 days. You would surely be charged and have little or no chance to get any refund, no matter you find out you like the room and hotel condition or not when or very soon after you check in at this place.
At Expedia.com, it is 24 hours ahead free...
