Disappointing stay at an otherwise charming historic hotel
We stayed at Hotel Kong Arthur for five nights in the summer. While the property has charm and is generally well kept, our overall experience was disappointing and not up to expectations for a four-star hotel.
Facilities: The hotel is housed in an older building, which adds character but also means it’s not fully accessible. Some areas require climbing steps even after taking the elevator, which can be inconvenient if you have large suitcases. The common areas are well maintained, but the layout can be confusing.
Air Conditioning: One major surprise was that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. We booked a suite and discovered this only after checking in, when we couldn’t get the thermostat to work. With outside temperatures around 28°C, the room was uncomfortably warm. It would be helpful if the hotel made this more explicit during booking.
Noise: Because there was no AC, we had to keep the windows open, but our room faced the restaurant courtyard. It was very noisy until around 11 p.m., making it hard to sleep. The front desk staff was kind and moved us to a “quieter” room, but it ended up being next to the restaurant’s back entrance. Early morning deliveries (around 6 a.m.) and trash collection on the cobblestone surface created a lot of noise. We didn’t sleep well for most of our stay. Perhaps this wouldn’t be an issue in winter when windows stay closed.
Management: While most of the staff were polite and helpful, I was disappointed with the management’s attitude. The manager I spoke with (Carolina, if I recall correctly) was dismissive and unprofessional. When I mentioned that we usually stay at Marriott and expected a higher standard, she replied, “Then you can stay at Marriott.” That response was unnecessary and unprofessional for a guest-facing role.
Overall: This hotel has potential, especially in cooler seasons, and the staff at the front desk tried to help. However, the lack of AC, significant noise issues, and poor management response made our stay uncomfortable. I would not recommend this hotel during the...
Read morethis hotel deserves 5 stars...for great apologies. the words were lovely and i kept getting them from all the staff. i would have preferred less apologies, and more service. fyi: there is about 10 steps up to the lobby. we had to drag heavy suitcases up these stairs. no doorman. when i told the receptionist, that this is hard for old people, she told me there was a side entrance on street level. i suggested she put a sign informing customers. first apology. i arrived for a visit for 2 days, with another couple. we had reserved the rooms 8 months ago, and had a confirmation agreeing to our rooms being near each other, and the kind of bed we preferred. when we arrived, i was told the hotel was full and we were lucky to get rooms at all, being near each other was beyond expectations. when i showed simone the confirmation email, she commented, well thats signed by bogi. he doesn't work here anymore. first she said the request was too difficult, then she actually tried to shift things, but could not make our requests.apology no. 2. then there was a storm at night. the wind blew open the cheap plastic latches and broke it. with the curtains billowing, the room got drenched, my husbands clothes got wet and a hard cover book was ruined.a building next door was being worked on and was covered with plastic. the wind blowing against the plastic made the sound of a machine gun all night long. apology no. 3. i had to ask 3 times to get that window fixed. i was told it was being fixed as we speak. i went up to the room and low and behold, no-one was there. i went to reception and got apology no 4. i asked to speak to the manager and was told kristen was on vacation. no manager to talk to, we are so so sorry. apology no. 5. i went out as i refused to babysit the room any more. when we returned at night, the broken latch was replaced with a cheap plastic latch. during all these struggles, there were wonderful apologies, but no mention of any kind of compensation, reimbursement, room upgrade, even a token fruit basket. they did at the end leave vouches for one and a half (!) drinks at the bar. i was just...
Read moreFirst of all: I don't complain easily. I travel a lot for work and sleep in hotels for over 40 nights a year. I can't remember complaining once in the last 5 years. But this time was a bit much. When you take a 9-day vacation in the dark season, we needed a little wellness. We have been to Copenhagen several times. This time we chose the Kong Arthur because according to the description (Hotels.com and other booking websites) it should have a sauna and a whirlpool. But it didn't at all. The sauna and whirlpool are in a separate building with a separate owner. That's why we didn't have any bathrobes with us, for example. We had also booked a room upgrade, the room was supposed to be 28 m2. I suspect the room had a maximum of 22, rather less. In addition, the small fridge in the room didn't work, which we didn't notice straight away, so our raspberries got moldy. In addition, the TV kept stuttering. We were also unable to lower the room temperature below 19 degrees, which is above our sleeping temperature. The room service did not refill all coffee types, when we left, we had only caffeine free coffee left.
Although you had a funny sign under the bed, there was not a single cleaning under the bed during our 9-day stay. There was also a room card from previous guests.
Also, room service disposed some of our paper bags that we kept empty in our room but they were nowhere near the trash. We always use these bags to separate our laundry on departure. They also disposed half of a bread roll that was left on the windowsill. This was perhaps well-intentioned but very irritating and I have never experienced it in this form before.
After we sent these impressions to the hotel, we received a reply, probably generated by an AI, which did not address various...
