I had the loveliest stay at the Ibsens Hotel.
Room: I ended up in one of the XL rooms - it was huge, with space for a large double comfortable bed, sofa, a couple of large cube seats, a desk, and enough floor space to do yoga (not that I did any). The room was in the tower, right below the roof. While the windows were not floor-to-ceiling large, they gave a great view of the surrounding streets. Sunrise/set is especially beautiful (imagine soft light peeking over the iconic danish rooftops…) If you’re lucky enough to get this room, I highly recommend asking the staff for a personal tour of the hidden attic above (hint: it’s not scary and no ghosts will jump out at you). The bathroom was small but functional and had cute little windows that brightened up the space in the day (hint: best spot for make-up). I also enjoyed the made-in-Denmark soap, lotion and shampoo+conditioner that came in large pump bottles. You know how most shampoo+conditioners don’t really work? These do! There was also a decent hair dryer (so hard to find in hotels..). You have the option of getting room access through an app that can be downloaded on your phone - beats keeping a card somewhere and trying not to lose it.
Facilities: The hotel has a Cosy Hour from 5-6pm, where you can enjoy juices, beer or wine. The gym in the next hotel can be accessed through the courtyard, and contrary to what the website / signs in the room say, it’s free to access. It has a rack of weights, a stationary bike, a treadmill, a pulley weight machine and a rowing machine (!! Water Rower - if you want to know. The battery needs to be replaced though). There’s also a spa - paid access, and bicycles for rent, but I didn’t try those.
Food: Breakfast was served in the hotel next door - a really good deal I must say. If you’re hesitating on the breakfast… my advice is to add it at booking because it’s much cheaper than the walk in rate. And if you think it’s expensive - remember that a coffee outside will already cost you slightly less than 50dkk. The food was of great quality - fresh, flavourful, delicious. I especially enjoyed the make-yourself waffles (perfect ratio of crispiness outside to fluffy insides. Goes well with syrup and a thin wafer of chocolate…), the homemade granola and the bread. There are also a few types of herring, if you’re into that.
Staff: The staff was really friendly. It was refreshing to have someone ask if I’d like a coffee/tea at breakfast like they really mean it (unlike..well..some other hotels I’ve been to). Reception was always cheerful, and Casper, who gave the tour of said hidden attic, is genuinely passionate about his job and sincere about making guests comfortable (thanks Casper!!).
Surroundings: The hotel is 2mins away from Norreport metro/S-bahn, which is super convenient. There are lots of food options in the area, including the indoor market with lots of gourmet shops and cafes (beware, it’s a day market. Don’t look for dinner here). The area also has a number of supermarkets (I recommend Superbrogen). If you’re there for a longer stay, there is a laundromat diagonally across the hotel, next to a ramen shop with the perpetually snaking lines.
All in all, I highly recommend Ibsens and would definitely want to stay here again the next time I’m...
Read moreNeat enough old hotel in the heart of Copenhagen near all things of interest, we enjoyed being able to walk out and find food, transport, parks and shops close by. The hotel itself is a classic old Copenhagen building which shows its age and while I'm sure some find it charming, I would say it's a bit below the standard you come to expect from more modern buildings. The staff was friendly and wanted to accommodate us although the cleaning staff seemed so into their own business that they wouldn't even notice us as we tried getting into the hotel's single elevator, rushing in before us so we almost collided as it didn't seem they were gonna come back inside the lift having just exited. No polite apologies either and on top of that the hallway was at almost all times we came through them, day or night, full of trolleys with used towels, jackets hanging on random hooks and generally just felt cluttered. Don't know if this was on all floors but it gave a weird impression disorder walking through the already-creaky hallway. As for the room itself, it covered our needs and we didn't have issues with noises from other guests other than those walking through the hallway but at least the walls, floor and ceiling didn't cause disturbance. The beds were a little too soft for our liking and left us feeling sore the day after. Also a shame we didn't get the double-bed we had requested during the booking process. Somehow they mixed that up and reception staff didn't seem to know what our booking involved when we showed up. We decided the twin beds provided could be pushed together instead and leave it at that as we had been up at 4 in the morning and were exhausted. A final note on the room would be the weird furniture choices. You get these bed side tables that look like a school kid's wood working project, kind of rough around the edges and felt very cheap and sort of sloppy from a decorating point of view. In contrast, the reception cafe has a wonderful interior and is very charming so I was a fair bit disappointed that the room gave me this impression. All in all, the hotel covered the features it should but I had really expected better from the impression I got when making the booking originally. Location is, however, enough of a pull to make up for the negative aspects. Perfect location for sightseeing and...
Read moreThe room was fine, clean and small as expected. We missed the 1st night of our reservation due to a 2DAY travel delay on American Airlines. I called the hotel, spoke to Casper, who was incredible, and he made a note about our late arrival. ||We arrived, checked in quickly, but the young lady at the front desk was rude. It felt like we were bothering her to check in. We had been traveling so long, we ignored her attitude and went on our way. We had an early flight the next day, and since we had been traveling so long, I opted for a wake up call. I called the front desk and the same girl answered the phone. She was quick to say “yes, yes, yes” to my request. I was a little hesitant at her rushed and dismissive attitude, so I repeated myself to make sure she had all my info for the wake up call. The next day, no wake up call came. Thankfully, we woke up to our alarms. We went to check out and the front desk was empty. Our uber was waiting outside. We called the number on the desk and could hear the phone in the back ring, but no one came. Our uber had to leave. Finally, the same girl came waddling out of the back to check us out. I told her, we never got a wake up call. She said “sorry, I forgot to call you”, and that was it. I told her I was glad we didn’t miss our flight. With the front desk unattended, anyone could have made it in to the hotel unnoticed. And the elevators don’t need...
