To say this hotel does not rise to western standards is to be generous, despite its being awarded 3 stars by the Egyptian tourism department. The facade and the lobby promises a quaint nostalgic experience with its worn but comfortable armchairs, but soon belied by the condition of the whole. The elevator is a creaky antique. Maintenance is lacking in all areas. The rooms of various sizes reminds one of a converted warehouse with a lot of old furniture thrown in, utterly without charm. Beds reminded me of the flat mattress one might encounter in prison. View from our window overlooked the ripped up mess of a roofs of the buildings next door. We didn't have a reservation but found the New Hotel by walking around the area near Tahrir Square. The staff was very nice and welcoming. My two key requirements for hotels are that they are clean and safe. The New Hotel fit the bill for our 2 night stay. ||||Sufficiently clean, though not extremely well maintained (seems like they are doing some renovations). The beds were not too comfortable. No A/C (electric fan). The shower didn't have great water pressure (but this is fairly common). The rooms are quite sizable. ||||We paid less than $50/night for this room right in the heart of Cairo, walking distance to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
