7 months prior to my trip to Tallinn I booked 2 old town facing apartments with balconies to accommodate 6 people. I was particularly attracted by the look of the bright décor and the balconies with their fabulous views. After reading a couple of reviews from guests saying they didn't get the room they were expecting I decided to contact Lighthouse directly and book through them to ensure this didn't happen in my case. ||||Upon arrival we were told by the receptionist that only one balcony room was available. She offered us another apartment across the corridor but as it had steep narrow stairs up to a tiny mezzanine bedroom with a very low ceiling we decided it wasn't suitable or big enough to accommodate 3 adults. Because it was on the other side of the building it didn't have a great view or a balcony and also there was a strange food type smell in the room so we felt it was a very poor substitute for the room we booked and expected. After about 20 minutes the manager arrived to sort things out. She was very friendly and apologetic and offered us another apartment in a new block very close by. At that stage it hadn't been cleaned so we headed out for a bite to eat and then met her there a couple of hours later once it was ready for us to view. It was very nice and had a separate bedroom rather than being a studio as at the Lighthouse so in a way it suited the 3 men in our party better and they were happy to go with it. They were however disappointed to discover there was no Wi-Fi but apart from that they enjoyed their 3 night stay there.||||As for the rest of us, the Lighthouse balcony apartment suited our needs perfectly and was plenty big enough for 3 adults. The small kitchenette was very handy to make breakfast, the shower room was large, clean and modern, the décor and furniture stylish and best of all the view of the park opposite and the spires of the old town beyond was fantastic. The only thing wrong was that one large (and very dark) roller blind was broken and permanently down totally covering one set of balcony doors. I couldn't understand why this hadn't been reported by a cleaner and subsequently fixed. It was quite disappointing that what should have been a lovely light and bright room (which is partly why I chose to stay there in the first place) was in partial darkness even on long sunny August days. I informed the manager straight away but unfortunately it didn't get fixed during our 3 night stay so I never saw the apartment looking at its best. ||||The building itself is very characterful and has been modernised very sympathetically with the communal areas including reception being very smart and clean. As the apartment was on the 5th floor it was very useful to have a lift to go up but we always used the beautiful elegant staircase to come back down. It was also a bonus that they have a secure luggage room as we had a late flight travelling back so this enabled us to make the most of our last day without the hassle of carrying bags around.||||Another positive point was the great location. It took only 5 minutes to walk to the old town either at Fat Margaret's Tower or the Viru Gate in the other direction. If you're visiting Kadriorg Park and Palace then the tram stop is right outside the building. As well as all the lovely eateries in the old town there are plenty more very close by including a small and reasonably priced pizzeria on the ground floor of the same building plus lots of choice in the Rotermann Quarter located behind the building. If you're planning a trip to Helsinki then the ferry terminal is only a 10 minute walk away. There are a couple of supermarkets fairly close to the apartments. We used one called RImi a few times and if you can overlook how miserable and rude the staff are (they don't even look at you let alone speak or smile) it is worth a visit if you're planning a picnic or to eat in as it's well stocked and good value. ||||So in summary, the location is fantastic as is the view, the building is characterful and the apartment is stylish and well appointed for a short stay. If it wasn't for the mix up with the booking and the broken blind I would have given it...
Read moreThe location is excellent and the staff downstairs is helpful, but they do not actually work for Lighthouse apartments, only hand out keys, so they cannot do much if there is something wrong.||The description of the flats is not correct - the description states there will be bathrobes. Nope. The description states there will be a coffee machine. No, there is none. The description states there is a big TV with cable, and yes, there is indeed a big TV, but apparently the batteries for one of the remote controls need changing, so it does not work. The staff downstairs can apparently only email the owners and ask them to buy more batteries. So, during our stay, no functional TV either. ||The flats are very clean but very basic and VERY small. The description states they sleep max four people, and maybe four very small individuals can find enough room, but I was struggling with just myself and my teenage son. The sofabed that doubles as the extra bed is super uncomfortable. ||The view from the balcony is amazing though, but as our room, one with views towards the old town, also faces a rather busy street, one may want to pack...
