Would give a 3.5 rating if possible. Quite liked it although was treated quite poorly initially when appointed a nice room which suddenly got changed to a bad room at the back of hotel after receptionist realised I didnt speak a lot of Spanish. Room first given smelled of sewage. Balcony dirty..the soles of my feet were black after 5 minutes. No furniture on balcony. Coffee machine plug did not reach electrical point so had to move it around. Only 2 hangers in wardrobe. Styrofoam cups for coffee in room instead of nice white China which they have in hotel...who does that? No filter for coffee machine, no milk or cream. Rather thoughtless. On complaining was reallocated the room I was initially appointed. Why was this changed in the first place? Young guy on reception quite rude, pulling strange faces when I asked about the hotel facilities. Do you have a gym? A what? Que? Oh a gym..yes. Do you offer massage..answer: no, we are not a spa! How rude. Also when asked for water was about to be charged for it until I questioned why no free water to drink to which I was advised oh yes in reception! But I had to push and pry to get that info. No English speaking channels on tv..in this day and age in a 4 star hotel in a big city. Not even BBC world or CNN. No ashtray offered when sitting smoking. Attention to detail very lacking. Not what I expected for the price and compared to other glowing reviews. Strikes me as very odd everyone gives 10/10. For real? At least from reading reviews I've become aware of free shuttle to airport..i wonder how I would have found out otherwise!...no information proffered. No help offered to carry bags. Otherwise nice building small pool, no lounger by pool only wrought iron tables and chairs of which 2 of 8 came with seating cushions. It wouldn't take much to improve all these things but it's the little things that make all the difference. Certainly room for...
Read moreThe hotel is in a convenient location. Walking distance to zones 4,9, and in zone 10. Close to the US Embassy. The hotel is incredibly outdated, and the theme is like a bunch of thrift shop trinkets that don't match or even garage sale clutter.
The rugs are old and dirty, so many different themes all over it all just clashes. It even smelled like an old thrift shop. The walls are super duper thin. Bathrooms are desperate for an update. There was a family in the top room next to us that was so noisy we couldn't rest the first night. Kids running nonstop up and down the stairs and through the hallway. It sounded like they were in our room.
The view and windows were my favorite parts of the room, and the bed and pillows felt like we were sleeping on a cloud. The rooms are more like apartments, which was pretty cool. The gym is not a gym, just 3 pieces of exercise equipment. The pool is more like a fountain it's very small. We didn't eat in the hotel so I couldn't say anything about the food. However, they did offer welcome drinks and breakfast ( we did not partake).
They wanted $50 US for shuttle service to the airport. The airport is about 15 minutes away and costs Q25, which equals about $4 if you take an Uber.
Overall, it wasn't the worst it was just okay. I probably wouldn't stay here again. I would definitely visit Guatemala City again. However, next time, I'll stay in zones 9 or a little further down on the other side of zone 10 or 4. Still...
Read moreI stayed here with a group starting a trip through Guatemala. San Carlos was a wonderful start to my first visit to this country.||||The hotel is very comfortable, and very elegant. The rooms are moderate in size by US standards, but very comfortable and very well appointed. Lots of closet space, very nice bathroom, and I didn't lose my sweetheart in a ridiculous king-size bed. The room was very quiet, as was the entire hotel.||||The breakfast (included in our package) was very good, and had lots of options. Infinite coffee was available. We didn't eat at Hotel San Carlos other than breakfast, but the dinner menu looked quite good.||||The hotel is about 3 minutes walk from the US embassy, so if you have business there you're in a good spot. There are several restaurants nearby, including La Estancia - excellent!||||There is an inner courtyard in the hotel with umbrella'd tables around it, and a very nice bar area to lounge in. Wi-fi is good here.||||The staff was great. Very helpful, and forgiving towards my very limited Spanish. The staff is generally conversant with basic English, I was embarrassed that I didn't know more Spanish. The desk staff were fluent in English, and very very gracious and helpful.||||I wish I could have stayed here for a few nights and gotten to see more of G City. Hotel San Carlos is a gem of a spot - the staff, with the added bonus of architecture and atmosphere, made for a delightful...
