We stayed in the suite with lake view. The view WAS gorgeous, and that was about the only redeeming factor about this place. ||Before I get into my actual review, some positives: there are a TV and HDMI cable provided which seemed to work (no remote though so you’d have to use the buttons on the TV), and the fridge was full-sized and worked great. There are many windows in the suite which is nice, and most of them can be opened, but there are no blinds on the east facing ones so sunlight will inevitably brighten the room in the morning. ||Also to note: there are many cats on the property and since the staircase is open to the lower floor, there’s no way to prevent them from coming in the suite. We didn’t mind, but we were careful not to leave food out and it could cause problems for someone with allergies. ||This location would've been extremely hard to find on our own, we took a tuktuk that dropped us off on the street but there are absolutely no signs indicating the location of the hostel. Before even getting into our room, we were greeted by the most unhelpful receptionist for check-in. We’d arrived a bit early, around 1pm, so we advised her that we’d be checking in later. She barely looked up from her phone while dealing with the registration, telling us check-in would be at 3:30pm (it said 3pm on the booking site). We were then told we could put our bags in a pile by the wall and wait. No information about wifi, bathrooms, or drinking water was provided. While we were waiting, my cousin got up to ask about the bathroom. She then noticed that they must’ve washed the upper floor, because water was dripping from the ceiling down onto the first floor everywhere. Into the bathroom, onto all our bags… The staff moved all the bags to a different area without telling us, but I’m assuming it was to avoid getting them wet.||To reach this suite, you have to climb two staircases. The top step is fully missing from the second staircase, and the plank of wood is still sitting behind the chair in the room. The staircase is open to the common living area of the hostel, so people can hear everything going on in the suite, and we could hear everything going on down there. The wood floors were dusty and grimy, to the point where we had to wear shoes everywhere inside. Most of the dishes left for us to use were dirty, the water jug (the only fresh water we were provided) had algae growing in it, and the dish soap container had a grey puddle of water in the bottom. The bug net over the bed had holes burnt in it, so we’re thankful there weren’t any bugs and we could just sleep without it. The door to the bathroom barely latched, the bathroom sink was pulling away from the wall, had a huge chunk of sink missing from one side, and no water was running from the tap. We also weren’t provided any hand soap. When we went to advise the receptionist about the lack of water in the bathroom sink, she gave us a (broken) bottle of hand soap and said the repair man would be back the next day. He never showed up. No big deal since we could just use the kitchen sink. Both the shower and kitchen sink drains stank when we ran water, and neither drained properly. The kitchen sink in particular always had water pooling in the bottom. My cousin noticed that while I was taking a shower, water was dripping onto the wires running along the floor in the kitchen. The wifi works fine in this suite when it works at all, but it cuts out for hours at a time and is extremely unreliable. I’d say we had more time without wifi than with during our stay. The bed, although comfortable, is a super single (we measured) rather than the double they advertised. The 6 inches of width makes a big difference when you’re trying to fit two people comfortably. ||I don't know how the cabins are, but I definitely wouldn't...
Read moreI LOVED THIS HOSTEL SO MUCH!! I ended up extending my stay and cancelling my other hostel because I loved this one so much. Everyone sleeps in either tents or tipis, but they also have single private rooms too i believe. I booked a tent and it was a very affordable price and amazing because it was like having my own private room. I had so much privacy. The tipis are bigger and cost a bit more, however they have a light inside and power for charging electronics.
The location is right on the lake which provides beautiful views. Located on the edge of San Pedro so you do have to walk about 10 minutes to get to the main area of town, however there are tons of tuktuks along the way
They have plenty of seating / lounging areas around the property, lots of hammocks, benches, tables & chairs. In the main building they have a bar, pool table, ping pong table, and TV. Hot water in the showers. Breakfast in the morning consisted of fresh fruit, bread, cofeee and a hard boiled egg. They had a kitchen communal kitchen with plenty of fridge space and cookware. Free purified water for guests. An outdoor fire pit area which was great in the evenings.
The only downsides is that the tents did not have power (which I didn’t expect them to) so we had to go into the main lodge to charge electronics which was only open from 9am-9pm. They also have no lockers or anywhere to store your belongings, I just ended up putting one of my locks through the zipper on my tent. Also the wifi did not reach to the communal kitchen and beyond, so I did not have wifi in my tent, only if I was at the building down by the water. Otherwise it was a wonderful hostel and i would...
Read moreAbsolutely loved our stay here and were super sad to have to leave. We would have extended our stay in a heartbeat. Right by the water and close to town (5-10 min walk from the main dock). Also there is an avocado tree providing many free avocadoes! There is also a very talented chef on staff who can make nicely priced (35Q) and generously portioned food.
This place is a hidden gem with truly unbelievably low prices, and the team is working on making improvements every day.
Given the super affordable pricing you do have to deal with witnessing the improvements as they happen -- toilets and showers can sometimes be uncooperative but staff is super friendly and willing to help. Neighbouring establishments can also be quite noisy on weekends but the hostel working on an eco-friendly sound insulation project to help reduce the noise impactfrom the neighbours!!
Jacob in particular was always attentive, insightful, and knowledgeable any time we asked questions. Very friendly and approachable, and just a generally fun and interesting human to talk to. Can't wait to see what happens with Gran Colibrí in the future!
P.S. Mishka the cat is very cute but addicted to carbs and will snack on your bagels or pizza if you leave...
