Capital Guest House — Hotel in Kolkata

Read about hotel in Rough Guide. As we approached, local guy walked with us. We informed reception that we had found the place without the help of this man. Informed of room price 890Rs, fan, attached bathroom. Cheapest room we had found with attached bathroom. Room was basic, but bed was fine and comfortable. Bathroom was filthy- had not been cleaned in years. Really, extremely dirty. Next day, reception charged us 800 for room, then 'remembered' that we'd paid 890 the previous day - clearly they were paying commission to he local guy that had 'accompanied' us. We reiterated that this was unfair as we had no dealings with that man. We asked, later that day, that if we stayed for a third night, could we pay 800 for the room- as in, the actual price, less commission. The man agreed. Then the next day, refused to give us change for the agreed price, and said we had never had such a conversation- blatant lie.||The staff repeatedly offer you tea/coffee etc, hoping for tips. Also ask when you are checking out, and then follow you requesting that you give them tips. Fair enough as they are on low wages, but given the cleanliness of rooms, and the attitude of the guys in reception, and the fact that we did not order any additional services, unwarranted. ||This hotel is tolerable for those on a budget, wanting attached (dirty) bathroom, but the attitude and friendliness leaves a lot to be desired. Actually its one of the rare kind of hotels which I don't want to review as I do not feel good writing nasty things about any property. But I have a moral obligation [ being a traveler myself ] to alert tourists . Avoid this place - its actually pathetic , railway platforms are more good nowadays in India . Small dirt rooms with filthy bathroom broken chairs and vintage TV . There are a set of goon like attendants to add it all. I have been touring various sites since 10 yrs of age and this was the worst place I have ever lived. Guest house personnel knew nothing about hospitality , all they do is eat, sleep, gossip and become obnoxiously uglier everyday. They do not guide you toward anything , do not cooperate with you and in the end will not even help you to get a taxi for the airport. I will recommend this so called guest house only to the Peaky Blinders and will enjoy those fat loosers getting...
