One of the oldest markets when Kolkata was the Capital of India, a must visit if you are coming to Kolkata! New Market in Kolkata is a bustling historical market, praised for its diverse range of products and lively atmosphere, though it's also known for being crowded and potentially chaotic. It's a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a unique shopping experience. Positive Aspects:

Variety:

New Market offers a vast array of goods, from clothing and accessories to household items and food, with numerous shops and stalls,

Historical Significance:

It's a landmark in Kolkata, reflecting the city's history and heritage

Value for Money:

You can find items at affordable prices, particularly everyday objects and clothes.

Vibrant Atmosphere:

The market is known for its energetic vibe, especially during festive seasons like Christmas, says Tripadvisor.

Foodie Paradise:

It's a great place to sample local delicacies and enjoy street food, with iconic eateries like Nahoum's and Badshah's, according to Tripadvisor.

Negative Aspects:

Crowds and Congestion:

The market can be extremely crowded, making it difficult to navigate, especially during peak hours.

Parking Issues:

Finding parking can be a challenge due to the market's location in a busy area

Hygiene Concerns:

Some reviewers have mentioned that the market's interior can be dirty and poorly maintained.

Aggressive Vendors:

Reviews on YouTube and other platforms have also mentioned that some vendors can be persistent or pushy with their sales tactics.

Potential for Pickpockets:

Due to the crowds, it's wise to be cautious of pickpockets.

Overall:

New Market offers a unique and memorable shopping experience, but it's essential to be prepared for the crowds, potential chaos, and to haggle for the best prices. If you enjoy vibrant markets and don't mind the hustle and bustle, New Market is a must-visit destination in Kolkata.

Having gone to this place whenever I visit Kolkata (I live abroad), I can say there is a nice selection of shops and it is one of Kolkata's main shopping hubs

New market has its own charm. Even today when Kolkata is flooded with shopping malls offering varied range of products new market continues to stand strong.

New market is located in esplanade which is a very busy place in Kolkata. This market has hundreds of shops with literally everything you may need. The place is.

Crowded, chaotic and colourful, New Market is a busy and enormous labyrinth of more than 2,000 stalls and shops, many under one roof. ... Haggling is the norm .

New Market is not just a market, but a landmark of Kolkata's history and heritage. It is a place where you can witness the fusion of the colonial and...

New Market in Kolkata is a vibrant shopping destination that offers a unique blend of traditional and modern shopping experiences. My recent visit left me quite impressed, and here’s why I would rate it four stars.

Atmosphere and Variety

The atmosphere at New Market is bustling and lively, filled with the sounds of vendors calling out and shoppers haggling over prices. The market is a maze of stalls and shops, each offering a wide variety of products, from clothes and accessories to fresh produce and spices. The diversity of items available is one of the highlights; you can find everything from traditional Bengali sarees to trendy Western wear, making it a one-stop shop for all your needs.

Shopping Experience

While the shopping experience can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of stalls, it adds to the charm of the market. I enjoyed exploring the narrow lanes and discovering hidden gems. The vendors are generally friendly and willing to negotiate prices, which is a fun part of the experience. However, be prepared for some crowded spaces, especially on weekends, which can make navigating the market a bit challenging.

Food Options

Another highlight of New Market is the food scene. There are several stalls and eateries offering delicious street food, including rolls, chaats, and sweets. I tried a few snacks, and they were flavorful and satisfying. It’s a great way to take a break from shopping and soak in the local culinary culture.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

One area where New Market could improve is cleanliness. While it has its charm, some parts of the market can feel a bit cluttered and messy. More attention to maintenance would enhance the overall experience for visitors.

Conclusion

Overall, New Market is a must-visit for anyone in Kolkata. The vibrant atmosphere, variety of products, and delicious food make it a memorable shopping destination. If you enjoy exploring local markets and don’t mind a bit of chaos, you’ll likely have a great time here. Just be prepared for crowds and bring your...

Mast place hai ladki log ke lye. Hamesha he yaha par bahut bheed rahta hai. Ladki log ka bahut sara saaman milta hai hai or wo v bahut sasta me. The New Market, formerly known as Sir Stuart Hogg Market, is a market in Kolkata situated on Lindsay Street, beside Free School Street (Mirza Ghalib Street/Rani Rasmoni Road). Although primarily "New Market" referred to the original enclosed market, today in local parlance, the entire shopping area is often known as "New Market". Some of the earliest English quarters of Calcutta were in an area known then as Dalhousie Square. Terretti and Lalbazar nearby were the customary shopping haunts of the British. Later settlements arose in Kashaitola, Dharmatala and Chowringhee. By the 1850s, British colonists held sway in Calcutta and displayed increasing contempt for the "natives" and an aversion to brushing shoulders with them at the bazaars. In 1871, moved by a well orchestrated outcry from English residents, a committee of the Calcutta Corporation began to contemplate a market which would be the preserve of Calcutta's British residents. Spurred by the committee's deliberations, the Corporation purchased Lindsay Street, made plans to raze the old Fenwick's Bazar located there, and commissioned Richard Roskell Bayne, an architect of the East Indian Railway Company, to design the Victorian Gothic market complex which would take its place. It began to take shape in 1873, and Bayne was honoured for his achievement with a Rs. 1,000 rupee award, a large sum in the 1870s. Mackintosh Burn was the builder. The giant shopping arcade was thrown open to the English populace with some fanfare on 1 January 1874. News of Calcutta's first municipal market spread rapidly. Affluent colonials from all over India shopped at exclusive retailers like Ranken and Company (dressmakers), Cuthbertson and Harper (shoe-merchants) and R.W. Newman or Thacker Spink, the famous stationers and book-dealers.

I had the chance to explore New Market in Kolkata, West Bengal, and it was an experience full of culture, history, and excitement. Originally established in 1874 during British rule, this market has stood the test of time and remains one of the city’s most iconic and busiest shopping destinations. As soon as you step inside, you’re welcomed by a maze of narrow lanes filled with countless shops selling everything imaginable-from trendy clothes and traditional Indian wear to leather bags, footwear, electronics, jewelry, home décor, toys, flowers, and more. The atmosphere is vibrant, energetic, and full of life. It feels like the soul of Kolkata! The colonial-era architecture still remains visible in parts of the building, giving the market a unique old-world charm. The red-brick structure and arched entrances make it feel like you’re walking through a living museum of the city’s trading history. What makes New Market even more special is its diverse crowd-locals, tourists, students, and families all come here, bargaining, browsing, and enjoying the lively ambiance. You can easily spend hours exploring different sections without getting bored. And the food scene is amazing! Don’t miss the chance to try street snacks, traditional Bengali sweets, biryani, or even a classic bakery treat from the famous Nahoum’s Jewish bakery-one of the oldest in Kolkata. If you’re looking for a place that combines shopping, culture, street food, and history, New Market is a must-visit destination. It’s more than just a market-it’s an experience that reflects the true spirit of Kolkata. Tips: • Be ready to bargain! • Wear comfortable shoes. • Visit during weekdays if you prefer fewer crowds. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kolkata. I also captured some beautiful moments and pictures during my visit-every corner of this place tells a story.
