Movie, the old fashioned way. Major general Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana, Home Minister of Nepal acquired 45 properties in Kolkata . New Empire theatre was one of them. New Empire cinema auditorium was set up in 1932. The chief designer architect of this theatre was A. de Bois Shrosbree. At that time this theatre was used to perform Ballets and plays. Eminent performers like Yehudi Menuhin, Zubin Mehta, Uday Shankar, Amala Shankar, Bohurupee performed in this theatre. In 1932 Indian Noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore directed play Natir Pooja here. In the early 1960s films were introduced here alongside theatre performances. In late 1960's this was turned into a complete cinema hall. Under the chairmanship of V. Shantaram, the First International New Youth Film was held in New Empire. The Cinema in next building Lighthouse was closed in 2002, but As of July 2012, New Empire Cinema is still active. Currently the cinema's capacity is 1000 seats. The cinema is good for people looking for a budget-friendly place to watch movies. It's a single screen theatre, and the ticket prices are quite reasonable.

On the ground floor, you’ll find KFC (really good), WOW! Momo (also nice), and Scoop (food is tasty but service is a bit slow). So, food-wise, it’s a decent spot.

Rats inside the theatre ,This was the biggest issue for me. It’s really scary to think someone might get bitten. The management seriously needs to fix this.

People smoking inside ,Even though there's a 'No Smoking' board, some people were smoking during the movie. It made it uncomfortable for others, especially non-smokers.

Inappropriate behaviour – There was a couple sitting behind us in a corner seat, doing things that made us uncomfortable. I’m not sure if there are CCTV cameras, but the place should be better monitored.

If they fix these problems, especially the rats and smoking, it would actually be a pretty good place to hang out and...
