Just because I choose a low-budget room doesn't mean it may not meet the conditions declared in the offer.
The lack of internet was crucial (I don't have a local SIM card and couldn't plan my further journey), but not only that.
The owner could have warned me, apologized for the inconvenience, offered the internet he used, refunded some of the costs, or made amends in some other way... but he preferred to deceive and lie.
I paid for something I cared about and needed, and I didn't get it. I left here disappointed and frustrated.
No Wifi (the owner promised to fix it the next day, but the same thing was said to guests who arrived 2 days before me). The next day the owner showed me on his phone how fast the internet was, and that everything worked, while there was no internet on my phone. I knew he was lying and I said that he was using a different rooter and a different password. He admitted it, and then he avoided me without a word of explanation.
1 double bed is 2 beds connected (it's ok) but with two foam mattresses that fall apart and you can't even connect them properly with a sheet that is too small and slippery. Not to mention the comfort of sleeping.
In addition: 3) The room is very damp and smells musty. 4) The synthetic bedlinen is unpleasant. 5) Some things are shockingly dirty (doors, curtains, pillows), some are very damaged (mattresses, mosquito nets) - SEE PHOTOS. 6) TV (I don't need it, but if someone is counting on it, it doesn't work) - unpaid subscription. 7) In general, the owner was not very interested in either the guests or the quality of his hostel (he didn't notice that the water in the bathrooms had run out; when asked about the ocean, he said it was OK to swim - 15 minutes later I came back (seriously) stung by a jellyfish - after that he never once asked "if I was OK").
Maybe all this wouldn't annoy me so much if the owner was honest and rose to the challenge.
The good things are access to drinking water, a spacious room, a relatively new bathroom and clean,...
Read moreOverall, Rajalakshmi Guesthouse in Mamallapuram is a fantastic deal for the price they are charging. I stayed there for almost 4 weeks in January 2020, while doing my second Yoga Teacher Training at a nearby facility. The hospitality and service provided by the Rajalakshmi's owners and staff were simply outstanding, and the food was fantastic. The rooms are small, but clean; mattress was very comfortable; shower was very comfortable and strong; AC was quiet; sheets were clean; and the overall cleanliness of the guesthouse was acceptable. The ocean is a few steps away, you can jog or walk along the beach for hours every day if you wish. Next door there is a cozy Ayurvedic spa where you can get massages for 1000 rupees. Numerous little boutiques selling beautiful textiles and jewelry would welcome you the moment you step outside. Mamallapuram is known for centuries-old stone carving tradition, you'd be impressed by the craftsmanship of the local masters. There are 7th century stone temples and historical sites within 10-15 minute walk or 5 min by auto rickshaw. Do not throw away your ticket after the first site, you can use it for all other sites. January's weather was awesome, Dec-Jan are the best months to visit I was told. I had wonderful time in Mamallapuram and look forward to going back for another training in 2021. I'd be staying at the Rajalakshmi...
Read moreWe had a short 2 night stay here whilst visiting the temples. Nice little guesthouse on a road stuffed full of them.||Our room was small, but very clean and comfortable. The bed was fine and the A/C worked well in the room we had. There is a cafe/central area at the end of the building on the first floor that was a nice area to sit and read or relax. We only ate one breakfast there of a small omelette which was OK. Can't really comment on the rest of the food as we didn't have any.||What I would say is that here, along with all of the surrounding area, are very specifically targeted towards tourists/travellers. The food that they serve and the prices they they charge all reflect this. If you want much better, cheaper Indian food, head to the small road to the left of the bus station and go 25m down there for an excellent place Mamalla Bhavan??). ||My only negative (hence 4 stars) was that they simply couldn't get the Internet working for us at all. They tried for 3 days, and even gave us the next door guesthouse and the cafe wifi, but they all kept disappearing. Maybe not their fault, but I could get the WiFi signal from the 2 guesthouses opposite the whole time. Not a big issue, but as we were trying to book future hotels, just a...
