My teen and I got a deal via TravelZoo to stay at Hotel Reale which included breakfast, dinner, a complimentary bottle of wine, a welcome drink, a free roundtrip ticket on the funicular and a wine tasting (with snacks!) in Montecatini Alto.
I do not usually leave reviews but felt the need to counterbalance some of the reviews we read on Tripadvisor, Booking and Google. After we read some of them we didn't know what to expect, as some people had a lot of negative things to say about the hotel, particularly about the food and the cleanliness.
I will make the caveat that the hotel is not a luxury hotel with gourmet food. But then - that is not what you would expect for the price you pay for this hotel! For the price, the hotel was absolutely lovely. It was clean, the room was a good size, the water pressure was BRILLIANT (better than I have at home), the room was cleaned every day, the beds were comfortable.
For the food - the deal included breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was croissants, toast, scrambled eggs, yoghurt, cereal, ham, cheese, a selection of juices, tea, a coffee machine, etc etc. Sometimes there was leftover cake from dinner. Also there was a pancake machine which my kid loved (and said tasted like a scotch pancake). Dinner was choice of three first courses, and three second courses and a dessert. While we were there we had potato dumplings with clams, tuscan sausage with beans, pesto pasta, pork escallops and caprese salad. In the reviews a lot of people complained about the food. Was it 5 star dining? Absolutely not. But the way people described it we thought the food would be inedible and it was perfectly fine, and way more than fine for the price of the deal we got. We also had lunch in Montecatini Alto one day, and the food there was average at best, but cost ā¬60 for two dishes, a bottle of water and an aperol spritz. So you have the choice of having perfectly ok food for free, or going out and spending. We saw in reviews also people complaining about prices at the hotel -- the one cocktail we got had the same price as the bar at the top of the hill, and the house wine was Ā£16 a bottle.
For us, it was a great place to start and end our days, during which we explored the local area, including Montecatini Alto, went to a local thermal pool, visited Florence, visited Pisa and hung out with our books near the lemon trees in the hotel garden.
The only complaint we read that we agree with is that the walls are thin and there is also a lot of noise outside when the bars and clubs let out. But my kid slept through it and I am at fault for not bringing earplugs.
All in all, I very highly recommend this hotel as a lovely, well situated place to stay to enjoy a super delightful part of Italy for people who don't want to spend a lot of money. The hotel was charming, the staff were friendly and helpful. Bring earplugs if you are a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis hotel is absolutely lovely. It is olde-worlde and has a real charm about it. Inside seemed dated but was lovely. Outside there was a great pool and lots of seating areas. The room was basic but clean and had everything we needed. The room was quiet and had a huge fan which we left on all the time we were in the room and it kept it cool. There was a balcony at the rear and a small, quiet street behind us. Our shower seemed to leak onto the floor no matter how careful we were with the shower curtain but we asked for room service each day and it was all cleared up and new towels provided, along with general cleaning and bed making. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Very few spoke English but it was no problem at all. Booking in and checking out were easy and efficient. The food was very good and there was a lot of it. Breakfast offered every choice you could think of and it was an unlimited buffet style. Evening meal began at 7.30pm (which personally is a little late for me) and the food was fabulous. 3 courses and choices within each. You could buy a drink from the bar to take into the meal or just order one with your meal and it was added to the room tariff. The first evening we were given a welcome drink and nibbles which was really lovely. We also were given a complimentary bottle of wine with our meal. It was a very tasty red wine which we could have purchased on subsequent evenings had we wished to. You could pay to have a kettle in your room. This was the only thing I would have liked included tbh - it is nice to have a cuppa when you first wake up or after a day in the sun. The free funicular ride to Montecatini Alto and the free wine tasting and nibbles were wonderful. We found the location quite easily and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Two different wines were brought to each of us (one white and one red) - just small drinks but really quite generous as a 'tasting'. We were left alone without any hassling to buy anything at all. It was a very relaxing experience where we felt totally at ease and without obligation to buy anything. Montecatini Terme is a very lovely town with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. There is a really lovely cafe in the park and we enjoyed a free music event there on our last night. The town is served by the railway and it was very easy to catch a train to Florence, Lucca and Pisa from there. The trains fares are so cheap compared to the UK. I would definitely recommend this hotel and the area - and will more than likely visit again. It was a very good 4 night break. There was a local tax to pay on leaving. During our stay the rate was 1 euro per...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMy husband and I had such a lovely stay at Hotel Reale for 1 week in July. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, especially Valentina, Greis & Andrea. The English speakers were limited but... hey we're in Italy not the UK, so does deff helps to learn a little of the lingo. For our deal we had a complimentary welcome drink the evening of our arrival as well as a complimentary bottle of wine in our room, and two free tickets for the funicular train to Montecatini Alto. It is a basic, rusticty hotel in Montecatini Terme, it is in a great location very central to the shops/restaurants & bars. 5-10min walk from the train station and the central bus station so great for visiting other parts of Tuscany. There is also a Conad (mini supermarket) 5mins walk where you can buy water/snacks ect. The hotel is super clean throughout, the only thing we said we would have changed is the shower curtain and the silicon round the bath as these had had their day but other than that no complaints. Comfy bed, air con in the room, rooms cleaned daily. Lovely little swimming pool that was great for cooling off whilst sunbathing. The Garden/Court yard is very well maintained and has lots of trees for shade. Breakfast was good, lots of selections with tea, coffee & juice included. I am vegetarian and there wasn't always vegetarian options for dinner but the staff are very accommodating and it was never a problem. My husband and I enjoyed the evening meals which were included in our deal, we just paid for drinks which were reasonably priced. We would definitely come here again! We had such a lovely stay! Grazi...
