Eight Portofino — Hotel in Portofino

Good location, friendly and accommodating hotel stuff, good breakfast. They have a sister hotel with in Paraggi (6-8 min away, hotel shuttle takes you there and brings you back) with a sandy beach and as a hotel guest for a fee you can enjoy seaside and I highly recommend that.

Room 10 review: Shower sides are open and water is spilling but there is only one foot towel so soak all the spilled water. It is most likely the reason for moldy smell in the room, water damage on the wall, and mold in the shower. Shower area needs major scrubbing. Water pressure is good and shower head is good too. Interesting that their toilet paper the same one you get at the airport :) Strange because they are charging quite a bit for a night and should afford to buy better toilet paper.

Bed is not comfortable because it is too hard and if you are a side sleeper, mattress doesn’t have enough give. Pillows are not comfortable too because they are too flat. Bed is a good size, probably king size. For how much we paid which is over $1000/night, I expected cleaner accommodations and a more comfortable bed with pillows.

My husband and I stayed at the Eight Hotel in early July 2025. The hotel was AMAZING. We were in a Deluxe Room, recently renovated with high quality finishings and designs like the White Lotus. The luxurious black marble bathroom had dual sinks, and a heated floor. The location is extraordinary, just 2 blocks from the port/pizetta. The shuttle service to the beach was very timely and comfortable. The beaches are a 4-5 minute drive, and all three main beaches (Dior, Dolce, and the Eight are all next to each other). Breakfast was good. The guests appeared to be mostly couples. The staff were nice, especially Ricardo. This is a boutique hotel with 8 floors. I think this is the best Hotel in Portofino, a true 5 star boutique hotel, if you do not want to spring for the Splendido. The Eight hotel is a one hour drive from the Genoa airport, given the roadways, and the taxi cost is around 175-225 Euros. There are no Ubers in Portofino, so taxis are the only possibilities. We had booked a 3-night stay but checked out after just one due to unacceptable hygiene conditions. The shower was moldy and visibly dirty, with extensive black mold under the bathtub. completely unacceptable, especially for a room costing nearly €800 per night. The bed and pillows were also uncomfortable and felt worn out.

Several features in the room didn’t work properly. We reported all of this to the front desk and asked to speak with the General Manager. The GM never contacted us. Instead, we were told by reception that “this is the room you booked” as if that justified the poor state of the facilities. Don’t let the hotel pictures fool you!

It’s absolutely unacceptable that a hotel charging luxury rates allows such hygiene and maintenance issues to persist while also dismissing guest concerns. We will be following this up with the relevant tourism and public health authorities in Portofino responsible for hotel star ratings and hygiene inspections. Travelers deserve...
